Boot Camp updated: now supports Windows 7

If you've been waiting with bated breath to dual-boot Windows 7 on your Mac, your time has come. File under "better late than never": Apple has now updated Boot Camp with support for Windows 7.

With separate downloads for 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Windows 7, the download also requires an authentic copy of Windows 7 or Windows 7 upgrade, and is only supported on more recent Intel-based Macs; no Macs produced before 2007 will support Windows 7, as outlined in this Apple support page.

If you're upgrading your Mac's other side from Windows Vista to Windows 7, you'll first want to download and install the Boot Camp Utility for Windows 7, which "safely unmounts the read-only Macintosh volume on Microsoft Vista."

Let us know in the comments if you have any issues with the update.

Note: If you are already running Windows 7 on your Mac in Boot Camp, you can simply run Apple Software Update while booted into Windows to get the updated Win7-friendly drivers.

Specs:

Windows 7 64 bit
MacBook Pro (purchased 2009)

I can't get Boot Camp to install:

* Apple Software Update doesn't display Boot Camp.
* The various downloads from apple.com refuse to run even as an administrator in compatibility mode.
* BootCamp_3.1_64-bit.exe runs, but quits after installing the nVidia driver.

The link to the Apple Support page is dead.

I've been running Windows 7 on my Late 2006 Macbook since November 2008. That was Build 6801. Even back then, all the drivers for the built-in Apple devices installed with the Vista Boot Camp drivers.

I installed 3.1 and it put in about 12 new driver packages. Functionally, there seems to be no difference, except there is a Trackpad setting to "Ignore accidental input when typing," which I don't think was there before.

There's two ways you can go about it;

1) Boot into Win7, download the update from the Apple website, install and you're done!
2) Boot into Win7, run Apple Software Update, download and install!

Personally I use option 1, means I have the update to hand if/when I need to reinstall.

Just so I'm clear, cause I am a tad confused here... All I have to do is fire up the mac in Win7 (64) and then open the bootcamp app and check for updates, and then just update bootcamp from there? I don't have to re-install Win7 again do I? Because it's been working great for months, and I don't want to screw it all up.

Thanks for clearing this up to whomever responds. :)

The Magic Mouse still wouldn't connect for me initially. However if you restart in OS X and remove it from the paired Bluetooth devices list and then go back to Windows it works fine.

I'm happy Windows 7 users are finally getting the support they need though what I want to know is why Apple still haven't made it so I can turn the keyboard light off on my MBP in XP, or 7? I really, really hate leaving that sucker on when I'm not plugged in

Wait, there were people waiting for this? Everything I've read says that this has been completely safe to do the whole time.
