Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Update 1.1 available

Earlier this month, we reported on an issue with the Magic Mouse and Apple's aluminum Bluetooth keyboard. Specifically, users were reporting that the mouse was draining the keyboard's batteries at an alarming rate. Now, Apple has released a fix.

According to Apple, Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Update 1.1 "...improves battery performance of the 2007 aluminum Apple Wireless Keyboard when used in combination with other bluetooth devices (eg. Magic Mouse, some bluetooth headsets) and addresses an issue with the 2007 aluminum Apple Keyboard and the 2007 aluminum Apple Wireless Keyboard where a key may repeat unexpectedly while typing." You'll find full installation details here.

This issue has existed for quite a while, as the support form discussion thread was started back in November. I've got the keyboard, but not the mouse, so I can't test the patch. If you do, follow up and let us know. Has your battery life improved? Thanks for the input.

I did have the battery issues. The batteries were lasting maybe 4 days before giving me the connection errors. After the update things are better. I updated on January 25th, and today my batteries are at 57% - so much better.

I should note that I am still on my original batteries on the Magic Mouse from about 3.5 months ago, and they're at 46% today, so they seem to last OK.

I hadn't noticed any battery issues, but ever since I installed this update a couple of days ago my keyboard has been repeatedly losing its bluetooth connection. Only for a second or so at a time, and then it works again, but it happens often enough to be annoying. Is anyone else having this problem?

Never had an issue.
I've had a magic mouse since it was first released, with the wireless keyboard, and have never had a problem with battery life with either, and am still using the same batteries for both.
I never turn them off either.

I've got an early 2008 MBP and do a battery cycle on it's battery every week. Maybe it's to do with the Machine too?

Your article should make clear, this only applies to three year old keyboards. This does *not* fix the issues with brand new (2009) aluminum keyboards eating batteries with the Magic Mouse running nearby.

Still waiting Apple...

Same problem here, says none is connected.
The install instructions also says the Firmware version number should be 321 after the upgrade. Mine says 68...
When I run it with my brand new usb keyboard it tells me the installed firmware are newer and therefore no update needed.

Does anyone run the wireless aluminum keyboard with a PC?

I just got the 21.5" iMac with the wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse. This updated repeatedly says 2007 Keyboard...is that the same keyboard that is still shipping or is it only an earlier version of it? I just don't want to install any updates that I don't need.

I wonder if this release also ties in with a fix to pair the keyboard with the rumored tablet.

Wondering if the loyal TUAW readers can help me. I am considering getting the Magic Mouse and the wired/no keypad keyboard. I have a 20" iMac, so the wireless keyboard isn't needed. Does the Magic Mouse go through batteries that quickly in this type of setup?
