Apple ships latest version of Aperture for photo professionals

It certainly caused a lot of excitement when the Apple web store went down this morning. No, it wasn't an updated MacBook Pro line but Aperture 3, Apple's high-end photo editing and image management software.

The latest version is U.S. $199.00, and upgrades are available for any existing Aperture users for $99.00.

Apple says Aperture 3 has "more than 200 new features", including Faces and Places, brought over from iPhoto '09. There is an enhanced tool called Brushes, which allows photographers to paint adjustments and filters directly onto their images using new enhanced edge detection.

This latest version of Aperture runs in 64 bit on Snow Leopard and 64 bit processors.

Aperture has been in a long features war with Adobe Lightroom, a similar and very popular application. Aperture was last updated in February, 2008.

We'll have a close look at Aperture 3 when we get our hands on it. Apple has a free 30 day download for people who want an advance look, but as of this writing download links haven't yet been provided. Aperture 3 needs an intel-based Mac, so older machines like the G5 are out of luck.

I am stuck at the boringness of my office between meetings, but I had time to write some stuff while my libraries import, I want to share it with you here:

Admit it, you only want them updated so you have more to complain about. They could add a 10 core Macbook Pro for half the current price and you'd still find something to pick at.

Bought Aperture 2 last Friday, then I saw this post. Worst feeling in the world (besides losing a credit card, which happened yesterday.) I called the online store and they said they'd ship Aperture 3 to me, and as long as v2 is back to them by the end of the month, they won't charge me for v3! :D It SOUNDS like as long as you haven't opened 2, and you bought within the 14 days, you can send it back and get 3 for free.

I'm using it now and it rocks!!! For me this is the most exciting thing to come from Apple for a long time. I live in Aperture! I used LR for a long time before but in the end it was the OS integration that caused me to switch.

One point of note that will please the Panasonic Lumix LX3 users out there: A3 supports the RAW format for this camera, finally!

But that's one of the issues -- slow, slow, slow product cycle and really lagging RAW support. How long's the LX3 been out? Over a year now?

EP1 still not supported about 9 months later.

It's been TWO YEARS since A2. No thanks. I'll stick with LR.

I was at the point of making the tough decision of switching from Aperture to Lightroom or sticking around for this new update. Anyone else in this boat?
I really appreciate the slideshow export feature - explains why iMovie has been veering away from including photo slideshow capabilities like what was included back in iMovie HD and all the predecessors.
I am continually disappointed with Aperture's RAW editing capabilities and this is one of the main reasons I am considering Lightroom instead. Would love to hear some feedback on this.

Not to bash or anything but seriously.... This is supposed to be software for professionals? Every one of those 199 improvements apart from 64-bit support (which should just give a marginal speed increase with photo editing) are consumer based....

Same goes for FCPS3. Please develop software for professionals and not for consumers if you say it's pro software.

It's not a lot more than just a iPhoto +
