Macworld 2010: TUAW attacks San Francisco with the Parrot AR.Drone

OK, let's face it. It is the coolest iPhone accessory since, uhhhhhh, the iPad?
We're talking about the Parrot AR.Drone, the iPhone / iPad touch-controlled quadricopter that, when it finally ships later in 2010, will be one of the hottest geek toys on the market.
TUAW bloggers Mike Schramm, Dave Caolo, Steve Sande, and David Winograd visited with the oh-so-lucky dudes from Parrot yesterday pre-Macworld, and had a chance to try our hands at flying this incredible little device. No, we don't know what this is going to cost, nor do we know when it will ship other than "in 2010," but if you have your geek on, you're going to want one of these. Watch the above video by our awesome videographer Chad Mumm for the scoop.

Nothing like an auto-playing video, filled with an annoying buzzing sound, right on the front page.
Well-played TUAW.
Smooth. Very Smooth.

There was an issue with the video. Should be fixed now -- we also put it behind the break for you as well.

This is the second time I've walked into my office and heard my computer "talking" to me. Auto-play video? Is this a boo boo, or is a new and improved TUAW? If it's new, I like the old better.

Agreed 100%. Autoplay is bad form. Rude, even.
Please set this -- and all posts -- to play at the readers' discretion.

Steve, what camera was this filmed with? That shallow DOF is impressive!

You guys are having WAY! too much fun... I need to be there to take some of that fun Weight off your shoulders. ; ) I actually fly RC Helicopters and I have a side business doing Aerial Photography with them. This thing is cool and looks pretty stable considering it's size. Very cool, and I look forward to it's release this year and seeing what all it can really do. Thanks for the Heads up guys! Have fun!!!
Cheers,
-Clint

I wonder what happens if it loses the WiFi signal or is flown out of range.

it'd be really nice if tuaw would post their videos in a h.264 format so i can read on my iphone or ipad in the future.
especially since their iphone app doesnt even show the blue lego. it just stops.

Indeed, this little device would fit nice in Terminator IX: The Final Chapter of the Salvation of the Judgment Day.
Anyway, the gadget seems real stable in the air. I'm sure there would be many useful way to use it for different domains, other than entertainment I mean ;)

So, can the iPhone app snap still images and record audio and video in flight? These would be quite awesome.

Oh, our dogs will go berserk!!! Just don't make them cheap like at the mall. I tried one of those $25 helicopters and it never even worked.

This is a major wannahave.
I do especially like the included combat software to compete against another chopper or even against a virtual chopper using augmented reality. Just a remotely controllable chopper is nothing new.
