Macworld 2010: Elgato products roundup
Although it isn't exhibiting this year, flagship Mac television hardware gadget maker Elgato still had a presence on the show floor in the person of marketing VP Adam Steinberg, who visited our booth yesterday.Adam ran down some of the current Elgato product offerings, including the Turbo.264 HD compression accelerator, the EyeTV line and the Video Capture standalone unit. He also left behind his demo Turbo unit -- which, if all goes well, we will give away to a lucky showgoer later this week.

I would really, really like to see a USB tuner from Elgato that conforms to the new UK Freeview HD standard.
If they release one, Iâll buy it right away. The channels are already up and running in my area but the first receivers are only just appearing for sale! Iâd much rather purchase a Mac-based solution than yet another standalone box to squeeze under the TV.
Warning.... Turbo H.264 HD is useless as Elgato does not support hard or soft subtitles.

February 13 2010 at 3:22 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI would agree with Moose - I am a big fan of the 250 Plus and support for me has been strong. When I had a problem, they offered me a free replacement by mail. As their offices are in San Francisco and not wanting to be without it for long, I decided to drop off the problem unit myself. The receptionist handed me my new unit on the spot. No hassles.
One MAJOR disappointment though - I went to MacWorld this week to see Elgato and their usual great show specials. They are NOT there and the MacWorld Expo show floor is a major disappointment, unless you need an iPhone case. Elgato - how about running a show special on your website anyway to show your support for the community?
I just purchased the Turbo HD. I am not very happy with it. I really don't see much of an increase in speed. I see a little, but it's only by maybe 5 minutes or so on large encodes. I hate that there is no bitrate /file size selection. Everything the application outputs is at least double the file size of the original file and the quality is degraded. Near impossible to get the file size I want with good video quality.
Just another user here... I friggin' love my 250 plus. It came bundled with eyetv3 and eyeconnect and I really couldn't be much happier. The features are outstanding for the price... I can stream recordings to my PS3, auto-output recording for my iPod touch, it pulls in all my digital channels (except On Demand - that would be sweet), and with the PeyeTV plugin for Front Row its a perfect complement/facet for my whole Mac mini HTPC rig. I haven't had any issues where I've needed support so I can't speak to that, but my experience has been nothing but positive.

You may have to use a VMesque software, I tried this before a few years back but forgot the details, sorry.
Just make sure you buy the WinTV-HVR-950Q from a place with easy returns like BestBuy
Their support is disgusting! They never properly support the PS3 playback and they always blame Sony , their video capture device will not play back mp4's on a ps3 .
Christian,
Try the SiliconDust HDHomeRun:

they have a version that has two tuners that works with Elgatos EyeTV software. It does mean you have to buy the EyeTV software seperately ($79) and the HDHomeRun Dual which run about $149.
I have this HD Homerun setup which is swell, as long as you have the same channel lineup available to both tuners. (E.g. I have two OTA antennas plugged in.) EyeTV doesn't seem to have any way to stick a guide channel to a specific tuner, e.g., If I want to record Craig Ferguson and Mythbusters at the same time, I need a way to tell EyeTV to assign CBS to the OTA-fed tuner and Discovery to the cable-fed tuner.
My workaround for now is to use two OTA feeds with the HD Homerun and the HTPC-mini and have a separate Mac with a separate EyeTV license for using the EyeTV Hybrid Tuner with the cable line plugged into in. Then I share the recordings between the Macs.
EyeTV's lack of reasonable tuner management is what keeps me from flirting with MythTV and its ilk. By the time I have it all sorted, I suspect I'll be paying for SuperHuluFlix and done with the rest of it altogether. Or Plex will handle live TV.
Does EyeTV support dual (two) tuners yet? (Officially, I mean.) That, to my thinking, is the major missing feature of the product. Other than that, Elgato seems to have great products.

I'd suggest start by fixing Turbo H.264 HD and add support for hard subtitles when encoding a movie.
This has been a request on the support forums since Turbo H.264 was released about 5 years ago!
