Macworld 2010: ScreenGuardz Privacy film keeps prying eyes off your iPhone

NLU Products makes a very large line of screen and computer protection products. I got a chance to speak with Kirk Feller the President and CEO of the company about their newest product ScreenGuardz Privacy (US$19.95), that was released last month at the Consumer Electronics Show.

With the iPhone gaining more functionality seemingly every day through third party apps, privacy has become a concern. I really don't think I want someone looking over my shoulder when I'm doing online banking or reading private email. Kirk told me that there is a large demand for products that not only provide screen protection, but also increase privacy protection.

ScreenGuardz Privacy is a very sturdy screen protector for the iPhone 3G and 3GS. The film used to cover the screen adheres using static electricity making it easy to put on and take off. But there are a lot of screen protectors out there, some offering privacy protection. This does it a bit differently.

Using tiny louvers built into the film, ScreenGuardz Privacy uses four way privacy protection. This means that whether you are using your iPhone in portrait or landscape mode, anyone to your side will see a dark screen. It also helps reduce the amount of light put out by the display which may be distracting in some situations. According to Kirk, other privacy protection products are fine under normal use, but turn the phone to landscape mode and your screen will be visible to any prying eyes. This is the first screen protection product that gives you full privacy protection,

I played with it for a few minutes and it worked exactly as advertised. The iPhone felt just as responsive as ever, but unless you were looking directly at the display, the screen appeared dark and this was true any way I held the device. This is a very simple idea, but the implementation is perfect. It's easy to install, and gives you some peace of mind. For anyone concerned with sensitive data, it seems well worth the price.

I've got a few questions

1) Is it matt

2) Does it look like the whole screen is one shade of black

3) Does it affect the quality of the screen at all?

I bought something similar from Japan but the problem is that although it works and looks awesome when the screen is off, looking at the screen makes the image looks pixelated and not as clear.

Thanks!

@rego
..So adults don't use the (very popular) sat-nav apps on their
iPhones?
Additionally I do not know any adults who do not use games on their
iPhones. Before you tell me my friends are probably all unemployed, I should point out that these are people in their 30s/40s in London with
high-earning jobs. I also work at the head office of the UK's largest phone retailer :)
Granted I am sure those people you mention exist and there is a market for 4-way privacy (just like there's a market for deodorant for horses....seriously), but you have made a hugely incorrect assumption there. 2-way privacy is for the mainstream user, which as far as iPhone is concerned is a huge percentage. People who wouldn't usually use phone apps, do use apps on the iPhone.

@corypep, my post was not belligerant in the slightest.
It was not written in a childish troll-like manner, which corypep has also
mentioned (thanks!).
I simply pointed out that checking Google is
the least the author could have done. In fact it would have been better if he hadn't published the article..

Bloggers are online critics, and must expect to have the quality of their work and (primarily) its subject matter commented on. That's why there's a comment box. I didn't WANT to be critical of this article, but it was so clearly wrong that I wanted to make the truth known and prevent ScreenGuardz from spreading their untrue claims further..

"4-way is not practical for the vast majority of users."

Really! You are not in the majority. Adults prefer the privacy to game playing!

@Blake, phrasing your critiques as an intelligent reader rather than a belligerent child will make your opinion go further as a general rule. It's an interesting tech. If you're right and It's been done before then kudos to you for knowing that. If you can't communicate like an adult the knowledge you have I for one wish you'd keep it to yourself.

I don't see how his comments weren't intelligent. If the author of the post didn't bother to do basic research to confirm a sales pitch's assertion of "first," and in fact that assertion is not true, then it should be pointed out and the author should be chastised.

Unlike a good portion of the internet, the commenter didn't resort to namecalling, belittling, flaming, or any of about a thousand other petty, childish games that most commenters do when someone else is wrong.

Won't this make games where you have to tilt your iPhone, such as Glyder, unplayable as you'll be unable to see the screen?

For the benefit of others, here is the main extract I was referring to:
"This is the first screen protection product that gives you full privacy protection".

This is pretty cool and a needed upgrade to my current protector.

There are many 4-way iPhone privacy protectors out there, some available since the first iPhone!
As a professional blogger did you not even contemplate using Google to check if this guy was telling the truth?

...and they are mainly 2-way for a reason. It means you can actually see the screen when you're gaming or using satnav or other apps. 4-way is not practical for the vast majority of users.

I had to open the Docs in iWork '09. It will then let me save it as an old version of MS Office. Funny . . . I have to use an Apple product to get my MS stuff to open correctly. :)
