Toy Story 3 and the Mac

One of the things I missed in the news last week due to being so busy at Macworld (along with most of the Olympics, though we did get to watch the opening ceremony at a post-show dinner) was the brand new Toy Story 3 trailer -- Pixar's latest movie has Buzz and Woody in a third adventure, and while I won't spoil the details, it does appear that Apple plays a big part in the movie. Macenstein has a quick breakdown of all of the places that Macs appear in the new trailer, with cameos by both Safari and iTunes, and director Lee Unkrich actually tweeted a picture of his editing session for the movie on a MacBook Pro (in Avid Media Composer) at 36,000 feet!

Of course, Steve Jobs was the owner and CEO of Pixar for twenty years, and he now is the largest individual Disney shareholder with a seat on the company's board of directors. Pixar always produces excellent films -- Toy Story was the studio's first big feature as a studio, so it'll be interesting to see what happens with the franchise after moving on to more mature pictures like Finding Nemo and Up. As always, when the movie comes out on June 18th, we'll have to keep an eye out for nods in Apple's direction.

What sort of editor actually needs an overlay for keyboard shortcuts in MC? That's pretty silly.

It doesn't mean it's crap, no, and cameos *are* fun, but saying that it makes Apple an important part of the story is a big stretch.

It's newsworthy for a few of reasons:

1. Apple products have been noticeably *absent* from Pixar films (other than recent subtle references like Wall•E's startup chime), despite the fact that Steve was CEO and owner for 20 years

2. Cameos are fun

3. We have many readers who are film buffs and, among those, dedicated Pixar fans. Those folks appreciate our pointing out things like this, and we're happy to do it.

We hit news, updates, tips, reviews, etc. every single day. Included in that list is fun stuff, which this is. If you disliked the post, fine. But there are a great many readers who enjoyed it.

Just because a post didn't speak to you doesn't mean it's crap.

The spinning beach ball was in Up, there was an Apple branded #84 car in Cars and there were a couple more that I can't remember right now.

Let's see, WWDC is rumored for June 28-July 2nd. The iPad will have been out for 3 months and Toy Story 3 will have been out for a week. Given its competition for those two weekends it will most likely be in the top spot one if not both weekends prior to the WWDC keynote. Steve sure knows how to line up his successes right.

Hey guys, there's no reason to be rude here. TUAW does write blog posts about all of Apple's products, services, etc. And if they want to post a small bit about a reference in Toy Story 3, why is that a problem? I find this interesting because I didn't catch a reference in the trailer yet. Not every post on TUAW has to be the most meaningful thing you've ever read. Okay?

Also, not every single post needs your input on how the TUAW staff has nothing "more noteworthy to report on". Seriously, as said, they post all the time about Apple's products, there's no reason this can't fit in with the theme of this blog, which after-all is: The Unofficial Apple Weblog.

Two uses of an Apple product in a movie constitutes Apple playing "a big part in the movie?" Seriously? Don't you guys have anything more noteworthy to report on than Pixar making yet another Apple in-joke in one of their movies?

Is product placement really that exciting? I've always found it distracting - remember that Bond film with the Vaio and the watches and so on and so on? Painful.
