Macworld 2010: David Chartier talks 1Password

You never know who's going to turn up at the TUAW booth; could be a former blogger coming to say hello, could be a representative of the company that makes a much-loved Mac & iPhone utility... but the odds of both of those things happening at the same exact time? That can only mean one thing: our old friend David Chartier in the hot seat to tell us about all the 1Password news.

Richard: I tried 1password for several months, and ran into the same problems. In addition, if you ever, ever, have to use a windows or linux machine (coffee shop, work, whatever) you're stuck with logging into a website, and copy/paste, or worse reading and re-entering from the iPhone app. Not only that, the original 1password anywhere website was taken down after months of trial, with no available alternative. I (like millions of others) have to use Linux/windows machines for work, so I begged for a true platform independent solution for months, and was essentially told "we have no interest in developing anything for windows/linux, and feel our web based solution (when we turn it back on again) is all you need.

I found a solution to all the problems. Lastpass.com. Works on any OS. Has a really elegant set of browser plug-ins that are just what you're asking for. iPhone app too. And cheaper to boot. Great customer support. User forums are great because of the larger installed base (since it's true cross platform). I haven't looked back.

If you're happy with 1Password, and spend nearly all your time on your mac that you have 1Password on by all means stick with it. It's a nice and polished product.

For the rest of us, try lastpass.

To solve the problem of password access on multiple machines, I use Dropbox and keep my 1Password database there. There's a "How-To" on the 1Password website. That way I can use the same database on my iMac or Macbook, and can even read it on a WIndows machine via a browser (still from the local copy in my Dropbox). Works really well and is still secure.

I really like 1Password. I was first introduced to it with the 2nd MacHeist bundle I think. However, I love the generated passwords, but the only hold up for me is not being able to access these passwords from a remote computer. I do have the iPhone app, but entering in 30 random characters reminds me of old product keys, which I hate. 1password anywhere is close, but why can't I login with my master password on your site and then you give me a toolbar like stumbleupon for Chrome that let's me login to my sites?
