Ask TUAW: Key remapping in Boot Camp, iPad tethering, file-sharing with a media extender, and more
Welcome back to Ask TUAW, our weekly troubleshooting Q&A column. This week we deal with some technical issues on our production Mac before turning to questions about Windows key remapping in Boot Camp, sharing files with a LaCie media extender, downloading images in Safari, recovering from a hard drive failure, and more.As always, your suggestions and questions are welcome. Leave your questions for next week in the comments section at the end of this post. When asking a question, please include which machine you're using and what version of Mac OS X is installed on it (we'll assume you're running Snow Leopard on an Intel Mac if you don't specify), or if it's an iPhone-related question, which iPhone version and OS version you have.
As you may have noticed, Ask TUAW is running a bit late this week. Perhaps somewhat ironically in a troubleshooting column, the reason is that my 24" iMac decided to go wonky right as I was preparing this week's column. I've decided to make a little lemonade, however, and describe a bit of my troubleshooting strategy. For no apparent reason the spinning pinwheel of death began appearing randomly, which would eventually result in the computer freezing completely and requiring a hard restart (holding the power button). After experiencing this a couple of times (and losing an earlier version of this column) I decided to reboot with my Snow Leopard install DVD to run Disk Utility. I repaired the disk and permissions but it didn't report any problems and the pinwheel continued to appear after a few minutes. At this point I figured the problem was not with the boot drive, but just to make sure I booted into single-user mode and ran the standard script with the AppleJack troubleshooting utility. Again, no problems were reported, but I continued to experience the freezing. At this point my suspicions turned to my third-party RAM. Of course, I had been running it for the last couple of years without problem, but I shut down the computer and removed one of my two 2GB SODIMMs. That appears to have done the trick and my iMac hasn't frozen in the last few hours. This is the second Mac I've had problems develop with third-party RAM after running for more than a year. So now with half as much RAM we can get on with this week's questions.

How would I reassign my control/command key in bootcamp, it's increasingly hard to switch back and forth.
To do this you'll need to remap your keys in Windows, using a Windows key remapping utility. There are a variety of Windows key remappers available, and this being a Mac site I don't really have any concrete recommendations. However, I can point you in the direction of KeyTweak a donations-requested utility that should do what you need.

Will Apple allow iPhone tethering to the iPad?
Predicting what Apple (and, perhaps more to the point, AT&T) will do is a fool's game. While a feature like this would be great, I'm not even sure if it makes financial sense. Of course we're still waiting on AT&T to give us iPhone tethering, and once they do the pricing is likely to be in the range of $60/month. With the iPad's unlimited service at $30/month it would only take about 4 months to make up the 3G radio surcharge versus the Wi-Fi only version.
Just for information sake, I'd note that it's already possible to set up Wi-Fi tethering on a jailbroken iPhone with a utility like MyWi or PdaNet. These apps basically turns your jailbroken iPhone into the equivalent of a MiFi portable Wi-Fi hotspot. Presumably your iPad could connect to it like any other Wi-Fi source. Needless to say, this is all unauthorized and probably violates the AT&T contract.

I'm running SL on a Unibody MacBook and am backing it up to a 1 tb FireWire drive that is partitioned for a time machine back up and a carbon copy clone backup. In the event my MacBook harddrive were to fail, what would be the best way to restore from backup?
The quickest thing you could do to get back running is to boot the MacBook from the FireWire drive (reboot and hold the option key to select the drive). You could then replace the internal drive on the MacBook and use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone back to the internal drive. You could also use Time Machine to recover any changes made since the last time you cloned. While it is possible to recover directly from a Time Machine backup while booted from a Snow Leopard install DVD, the clone restore should be quicker.

Hi. I'd like to create an Automator service that would save me some clicking. Basically I'd like to have an extra option in the Safari Context menu that would save the selected image directly to the My Pictures folder.
It turns out that Safari will automatically change the contextual menu to save images to your defined download folder. So if you changed your default downloads folder in the Safari preferences to the Pictures folder, you wouldn't have to add anything else.

I bought a LaCie LaCinema PLAY drive to use as a sort of media server. It has wireless N connectivity and outputs HDMI to my TV. I have an Airport Extreme which is on the other side of the room. I'd like to be able to drag files from my computer (a MacBook 2.2Ghz, using 10.6.2) to the drive, but I can't see it in the Finder. I have another LaCie drive connected via USB to the Airport Extreme which I can see since I guess it can use AirDisk. The PLAY drive can connect to the network via WiFi. I'm confused because if someone brings another laptop into my house, I can see it in the Finder under 'shared'. How come I can't see the PLAY drive? Does it need to be formatted? I don't think I can since it has software for the remote and wifi on it.
I had a look at the manual PDF for the LaCie LaCinema PLAY and it indicates that the only sharing option for Mac is via the TwonkyMedia Server (p. 38). In order for the drive to appear in your Finder sidebar it would have to support the AFP or SAMBA file sharing protocols, but as far as I can tell the LaCinema does not. So, unfortunately, you won't be able to just copy to it from the Finder, but if you install TwonkyMedia Server, you will be able to copy files from the Mac to the LaCinema through its interface.

I have MobileMe account and I don't use the storage (246MB out of 20GB) that I pay for. So, now I want to store all my mail in MobilMe instead of my computer. That way I always have all that information available.
In my computer I have about 3GB of Mail in different folders "Under My Mac" but I want to move it all to MobileMe. What's the best way to do this?
I've made a test just by dragging a folder with 256 messages from "Under My Mac" to MobileMe to test it out and it only copied 157, and to try and figure out which mail was copied was a pain and gave up. Please help!

Question-
I have a total of three HD and I notice that under Spotlight Preferences>Privacy, I see a two folders named "FlowData," I have no idea what that they are.
When I put my cursor over it, it shows the folder is under my second or third drive: /Volumes/Macintosh HD2/FlowData. when I open those FlowData folders there are a bunch of folders and files that make no sense to me. I just want to know what application is using that? or if it's just from the operating system? (10.6.2)

My 27" iMac's hard drive is slow. I've decided to replace it with an SSD. OS X, applications and my Aperture Library are the only things that will live on the SSD. Everything else, which is just my user's home folder, will live on a FW800 external drive.
I just moved my user home folder onto the FW800 drive and configured Time Machine properly, and configured my user account to point to the external drive. It's all working great.
My question is this: When I get the SSD and install a fresh copy of Snow Leopard, do I create a new user with the same name as my current user then point that account to the external drive or will SL see the user account that's already on the external drive? What's important in the Advanced Options for a user account- i.e. should I note the User ID, Group ID, Short Name, Login Shell, and UUID of my current user and replicate that with the new install?
FWIW: I see no difference in performance with my home folder on a FW800 drive which is a first gen 1TB WD Green inside a OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro. It's a sweet setup and should allow future growth as my iTunes library grows very quickly.
I have a question - I have a iPhone 3G 8GB. There are 11 home screens on my device now and I noticed that when I install new apps they don't appear anywhere and are only available if I search for them. How can I rectify this? Does this mean that 11 is the maximum number of home screens? Thank you
'Debayo
I don't get the whole 3G/WiFi version of the iPad.
If the device comes with BlueTooth and iPhone tethering (in general) is supported in your country then the only point of selling a 3G compatible iPad is if you don't own a mobile phone.
Based on this why would you own an iPad but not a mobile phone?
Granted there are people who may be on pre-paid plans that proves tethering is too expensive, but VHA here in Australia has no tethering restrictions on an iPhone for contract subscribers at all making the 3G iPad pretty much redundant - I'm sure a 3G iPad will cost the same per MB downloaded as an iPhone's data plan.
I'm open to the fact there are uses for the 3G version even here in Australia, but to come up with a pricing model to satisfy both is going to be a nightmare unless both charge the same amount.
Surely Bluetooth tethering with a device like the iPhone is going to be up to the providers discretion?
If they offer no 3G tethering here in Australia then you have to pay 2 monthly service fees (iPhone and iPad) and have 2 separate caps.
If tethering is allowed then you will only have to pay 1 monthly service fee but share you data cap across 2 devices - though you would be more inclined to use the iPad for data access than your iPhone - or would you?
Well, ask yourself, can you access the internet now by tethering one iPhone, or one iTouch, to another iPhone? I don't think it is possible. Remember, the iPad is going to be a cul-de-sac device like the iTouch or iPhone. It won't have the needed components that, say, a notebook has to establish tethering.
February 22 2010 at 3:20 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDear TUAW,
I want to purchase a new 27" iMac with the i7 processor. However, the reports of DOA units and yellow screens on various forums has me worried. I have decided to pull the trigger and buy one in the next couple of weeks, UNLESS(!) there is reason to believe that the iMacs will receive a small spec bump in the coming months.
A slightly more powerful i7 chip as well as the addition of an eSATA port and SSD options have been rumors. Do I have any reason to believe that any of these rumored rumors might have some truth to them, and that I might see any one of them happening in the first half of this year?
Sincerely yours,
Jake
I'm not sure if PDANet will work for tethering the iPad to the iPhone. IIRC, PDANet requires that the non-iPhone device create an AdHoc WiFi network, which I doubt the iPad will be able to.
February 20 2010 at 7:15 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI love the idea of the 'find my iPhone' for mobileme but was wondering if there was a 'find my MacBook' feature as well? I recently had my MacBook stolen and replaced it, but would like to be prepared if it happens again. If mobileme does not support 'find my MacBook' who would I voice my request to at Apple?
I also am rather irked with the Google Buzz fiasco, and was thinking about mobileme as an alternative to gmail. I felt like gmail was the premier web based email service, so I was curious, how does mobileme stack up gmail, Yahoo or any other service you guys could recommend? Please note, I have a MacBook and an iPhone, so how well email services work on all 3 would be helpful. (I now realize I want a full email for Apple comparison so maybe I'm posting this in the wrong thread.)
PS I have Hotmail and I don't consider it a competitor. I use it for my 360 and as a junk email account.

Unless something changed that I am unaware of recently. PDAnet has to connect to a network set up from the mac or pc side then PDAnet connects to it (ADHoc).

I tried and couldn't get to work. I talked to Sal Soghoian, the VP at Apple in charge or Automator and Applescript, and a services attached to an image in a browser currently can't be done. If I remember correctly, The Service Engine see html code in that instance, but definitely does not see the image. So the image service is not available from the service menu.
Sorry
Stephen, actually it works perfectly as described above. go to the Safari Preferences/General/"Save downloaded files to:"/"Other...". then point it to the Pictures folder. Now every time you right-click (CTRL-click) the contextual menu says "Save image to 'Pictures'".
