Get a TUAW discount on Mac theft recovery service from hidden
Apple's laptops and iMacs are attractive targets for thieves, since they're easy to move and have a good resale value. We've seen several Mac applications or services that work to help you retrieve your favorite Apple product if it is ever stolen; LoJack for Laptops (US$39.95 per year), Undercover ($49.00 for a lifetime of tracking), and MacTrak ($24.95 per year) are all perfect examples of these programs. Most of these apps have two things in common; they will attempt to locate the whereabouts of the computer and also send a picture of the thief using the built-in iSight camera. Now a new name has appeared in the field; hidden. The name is apt, since there's no visible sign on the computer that the software has been installed. There's no app in the applications folder, and no preference pane. To use the application, you simply download and install it, then restart your Mac.
Most of the time, your Mac won't be sending out updates of its location. When it is stolen or lost, you go to the hiddenapp.com website, log in, and then change the status for the tracked computer from "not stolen" to "stolen." The service begins looking for your Mac, and within minutes the site displays a Google map showing its approximate location (determined through Wi-Fi geolocation) and, more importantly, photos of the person using the Mac and screenshots of what they are doing. Location updates happen every 10 minutes and also include traceroute information including the public IP address of the Wi-Fi network being used by the thief. This information can be provided to ISPs and local police to help you get your computer back.
hidden provides some helpful tips to get thieves to use the machine and not just wipe the hard disk. They recommend adding a firmware password to your Mac to prevent hard disk erasure, as well as setting up a guest account to encourage your friendly neighborhood burglar to use the Mac. It's also important to remember that this application won't work on Mac OS X versions earlier than 10.5, since the Skyhook Wireless SDK doesn't work on non-Leopard/Snow Leopard Macs.
hidden has plans for expanding the application in the future by adding key logging, remote wipe, and screen takeover functionality. Of course, none of these theft recovery apps work if the thief doesn't connect it to a network, and if they turn Wi-Fi off, there's no way to determine the location of the device. But it's unlikely, given the ubiquity of Wi-Fi worldwide and the desire for computer users to be connected to the rest of the world.
In practice, the hidden software worked just as well as some of the other theft recovery apps I've tried. The mapped location showed my computer within about three houses of my real location, and the IP address information would be usable by my ISP to pinpoint my street address. Even more damning evidence for a thief would have been the picture of his face and what he was using the Mac for.
Now the great news about the hidden app -- the service costs just $20 for the lifetime of your Mac. However, the company has created a special TUAW promo code that gives you coverage for the lifetime of your Mac for $10. Use the code TUAW50 to start protecting your favorite Mac for the cost of a couple of café mochas.
Check out a few screenshots below for an idea of how this app looks and works.

NOTE!
If you're using LittleSnitch on the same machine than "hidden", be SURE to run/test it in "stolen" mode yourself before your machine gets actually stolen/lost, because hidden will ask multiple permissions from LittleSnitch to access the internet to actually make it work!
Thank you Hidden for clarifying a few details.
Ok... one person says the light comes on every few minutes, another says the light does not come on. No word from the developer to confirm this.
The light SHOULD NEVER turn on. For a product that is suppose to run in stealth mode, having the light come on is NOT running in stealth mode.
What about when the picture is taken, is the camera capture sound heard, does the screen flicker to indicate that a screen shot has taken place. Activity like this is not running in stealth mode.
Since there is not trial version, is there a money back guarantee if this product does not run in stealth mode as expected.
Hello,
Unfortunately the iSight light does come on very briefly. All important data is sent to the server BEFORE the light is triggered in case the thief is startled.
We are unaware of any mac theft recovery software that captures iSight images without triggering the light, and we are working extremely hard to fix the issue.
The map service relies on Skyhook's coverage which you can see here: http://www.skyhookwireless.com/howitworks/coverage.php
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact support@hiddenapp.com
Many thanks,
The hidden team.
Forgot to mention - there is no evidence of the screen capture. No sound, and no flickering.
Thanks,
The hidden team.
No, the iSight camera light does not come on.
As far as I know, there is no "trial" version that you can download.
What I haven't seen mentioned from any reviewer of security or recovery programs is whether or not the iSight camera light comes on when taking a photo. I've looked at some of the security apps which detect motion. Whenever the camera is in use, the light is on. A sure sign that your photo has been taken.
Does the iSight camera light come on when "hidden" is doing its thing. It shouldn't. Also, I could not find a download link to try this out.
Now that I've marked my Macbook Pro as stolen, my webcam light comes on for about a second every few minutes. Also I can't (yet) get the map function working. But the folks at hidden seem very nice and responsive. I tried preyproject and it seemed harder to use, doesn't have mapping (to my knowledge), and is awfully tough to uninstall. I think for the average user hidden is worth the $10, assuming I can get it all working.

I have been happily using it for several years now with several OS updates and Macbook changes...
More importantly, however, they do work with the authorities to recover your mac. From what I can see from hidden app's website, they give you all this info but then you are on your own - and since you can activate this at your heart's content, stories like the recent school district one seem just a little bit easier to reoccur.
Not sure but TUAW seemed quite eager to give away promo codes before making a good comparison of the different offerings...
Just my 2 cent...
Www.preyproject.com is free, and works on all platforms and It is not made by Google. They also have an Andriod app and I think an iPhone app in the works!!! TUAW where is a write ip on this gem?
February 20 2010 at 2:49 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyPhillip, this app is not "made by Google." It does use Google Maps to show the location of the stolen computer.
The reason we didn't write up Preyproject.com is that we didn't know about it at the time this post was written. The applications are quite similar, and for those who don't need support, Prey looks like a very good open source alternative.
Steve
Awesome little App, it works as advertised - I have checked it out today to protect my new MacBook Pro, bought it for $10 bucks and installed. Once you mark your hardware as stolen, you get all the info needed to get it back including pretty detail and accurate map with location, photos of the user, screenshots and ISP info. I am going to post a blog entry about it today as well. You cannot go wrong with this price for what you get...

Marked my iMac stolen in the control panel - screenshots and pictures from iSight and location works perfectly.
Worth a shot for 10 bucks.
Another free alternative is vigimac.com. It doesn't take photos with isight but its a lot better than nothing.
