Apple earns 5.5 percent total market share in France

Apple had a great holiday sales quarter in the US and now research firm Gartner is reporting similar good news from Europe. Specifically, Apple shipped 182,000 machines in the fourth quarter of 2009, giving it a 5.5 percent total market share in France. It should be noted that Apple didn't reach the top five in any other European country.

Overall PC sales declined throughout Europe in 2009, while Mac sales in the U.K. increased from 3.8 percent in 3Q 2008 to 5 percent in 3Q 2009. Gartner attributed the increase partly to the "halo effect." That's the common term for increased sales of Macs from PC owners who have purchased iPods or iPhones and find that they love the design and ease of use of the Apple devices.

The only manufacturer to out-perform Apple's growth in Europe during 2009 was Acer, which saw 35.5 percent growth.

Currently there are two Apple retail stores in France: Apple Store Odysseum in Montpellier and Apple Store Carrousel du Louvre in Paris.

So, Apple can say "We're a big deal in France" and prove it?

Bonjour from Paris,

Despite good sales numbers, the iMac introduction in France was a complete failure due to its unavailability and lack of communication.

I placed an order on Dec 10th, 2009 to a major French reseller (FNAC) with confirmed delivery for X-mas and a -10% rebate. On Dec 23rd, nothing. No gift under the tree: failed X-mas

On Dec 26th, I received a mail to tell me the iMac wasn't available and that a new delivery date couldn't be set.

On January 10th, 2010, still no news . So I cancelled my order.

So next time Apple launches a new product, a very strong improvement in logistics, quality and availability will be needed .

Otherwise, Apple would be just another hi-tech standard player with vapourware .

5% in the UK is tiny. It shows Apple is still a upper end of the market brand, which is a pity. Acer's 35% growth in the UK must be on account of their super cheap laptops. They seem a bargain, but shopping for a decent PC laptop is a nightmare (had experience of that recently). I couldn't find a machine to match my 17" MBP in terms of raw power, battery life and sheer quality of the design. I definitely see more Apple laptops around, at least in London.

Cool beans Apple.

The Apple Store in the Louvre is just obnoxious (as is the Sbux down the hall).
