iPad 101: Reserve an iPad from outside the US

If you're living in Canada or Mexico -- but close enough to the border to make a trip to a US Apple Store -- Clean My Screen has posted instructions for reserving an iPad outside of the US. There are 23 steps in the guide, but it doesn't look terribly complicated.

It involves the creation of a new account with a US address and no payment method, but with a real email address. Then you can confirm your account and make a reservation, although you'll need to make a trek (or have a friend in a convenient location do it) to a brick-and-mortar US Apple Store to retrieve your iPad.

As noted in the article, having a US iTunes account can be handy for a handful of other reasons, including being used to buy free apps and music, and potentially get free eBooks once the iBook Store opens. If you live outside of iPad reservation territory, give it a shot and let us know how you fare.

@willyu3414 I agree. Good point. I would expect the policy will be accepted by most, and those who press the cash payment and express outrage will be given their device.

Any good retailer will avoid conflict by just doing what the customer wants, if it does not cost them money.

You make a very good point.

I completely disagree. I worked at an Apple Store during the time the first iPhone was on sale
and we regularly turned people away from buying the iPhone. During the last 5 months it was on sale we required a valid US issued ID to purchase. No ID no phone.

@dustin I confirmed with the manager of a Palo Alto Apple Store on University Ave, that these are the instructions they have.

Canada will have the device within 30 days of the 3rd, The issue is that there are no service spares in Canada at this time, support in Markham is not yet trained, etc. As supply will be contained, this does not represent a problem for Apple as they will not have enough product to meet US demand at the outset anyway. This policy will protect Canadian consumers - ensuring that if they wait, they will what they need in place, in Canada to service and support them some weeks after the US release.

It also leaves open a little more of a window of time, to attempt to get at least some content deals in place for the Canadian market prior to launch.

Makes sense to me.

The Canadian Apple store has details of the ipad that are different to that of the US store. Mainly that the ibook reader is not mentioned on the Canadian site. I understand that the ibookstore will only be available in the US, but does it mean that when the ipad that is (eventually) sold in Canada it will not have the ability to read eBooks? Checkout the Canadian website and compare!!

I guess you will need to open a US iTunes account to download the ibook app?

My account is with Canada iTunes store. I got a confirmation mail and doesn't seem to have any problem. Here is what I did

-I went to the US iPad page (make sure it says www.apple.com/ipad, not www.apple.com/ca/ipad)
-click on Pre-Order on the top row
-on pre-order page, click on "reserve now" instead of "pre-order now"
-it sends you to the store selection page, choose the store you want to pick up (in my case, somewhere near Seattle) and click on "next"
-then you choose a model, only Wi-Fi for reservation, click on one of them, or many of them. I got two, 16 and 64, then click on "reserve"
-Now it asked for your Apple ID, which I already have before and my address is Canadian (and it's associated with my Canadian iTunes account)
-log in, confirm, and got an email soon enough in my .ca email account

I had no problem with it, but with a Canadian Address I don't know if they'll cancel it later or something.

anyways, I am still undecided if I want to go with 32gb 3g instead of 64gb wifi (16gb wifi is for my parent). It doesn't hurt to have a place holder though

"Will the 3G model work outside the US or not?"

@Khalid,

I think the pithy answer is "it will".
The serious follow-on question, is "when?".

It's a microGSM card, which if other data providers in the world support, it should be fine.

Given the rather open nature of the Apple/AT&T 3G contract, I feel hopeful that someone could say:

a) buy an iPad 3G in the US
b) buy a data plan in the US
c) turn on 3G plan
d) turn off your service while outside the US
e) go to country with GSM provider, new microGSM card and plan
f) turn on your service in new country
g) (optional) return to US go to step (c)

or skip steps b-d entirely.

I know this trick from a long while but I am looking for someone to answer me the questions: "Will the 3G model work outside the US or not?"
I know that no one can answer this question until the actual units are shipped so I think I'll wait for some other person to test it.

I thought it would work on any carrier that supports the MicroSIM.
