VMWare Fusion 3.1 beta available
On Monday VMWare released the Fusion 3.1 beta with some nice changes, including support for OpenGL 2.1 and 2TB virtual disks. There are more than 10 changes or improvements in this beta, including improved graphics performance for games and 3D apps (via OpenGL 2.1), improved USB and Boot Camp support and lots of UI improvements. You can get the full run-down here.
The increase in virtual disk size is significant. Prior to this release, the max was 950GB. The update also bumps up parallel processing performance with support for 8-way SMP. Anyone testing the beta is encouraged to share their experiences in the beta forums.
Earlier this week, MacTech posted a video of Parallels out-performing VMWare Fusion in a graphics-intensive, side-by-side comparison. Perhaps the changes in this beta will address those shortcomings (though I'd just boot into Windows via Boot Camp if running a 3D game).
Fusion costs US$79.99 as a download or $99.99 for the app plus upgrades for the next 12 months. It requires an Intel Mac, at least 1GB of RAM (2GB RAM recommended), 700MB free disk space for VMware Fusion and at least 5GB for each virtual machine; it runs on Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later; Mac OS X 10.6 or later. If you want to try out the beta, you will get an expiring serial number; you can also use your existing Fusion 3 serial if you already own the product.

Honestly, the update that struck me first and that I care about the most so far? It doesn't ask for an admin password every time I start up my Boot Camp partition. Honestly I can't believe it took this long to fix that. Otherwise, not really seeing too much different. If I wanted to play games I would restart into Boot Camp.

@snugs- what they're saying is they'll give you free updates within this version for 12 month.
if 4.0 comes out is 6 months, you don't get an update free because it's not 3.x. If in 13 months 3.5 comes out and you're on 3.4, you don't get the update because it's out of the 12 month window.
so for 12 months you get all the 3.x updates you can handle. Pretty standard practice, see OS X 10.5.7 vs 10.6
I'm not sure what you mean. Did you pay 79.99 PLUS extra? I know the price is 79.99 for VM Ware Fusion 3.0, and 3.1 is free. Also, for those who had version 2.x, the upgrade prices was $39.99 --- It also came out October 2009, about 5 months ago. I don't think 4.0 will come out any time soon (if anyone knows please post!) --- but it's no different than buying Vista and then having to buy Windows 7 a few months (or years for some people, or even weeks for some people too).

VMware doesn't charge for point upgrades (3.0 to 3.1 or 3.1 to 3.9999) - They as well as most software companies only charge for incremental upgrades 2.x to 3.x, or 3.x to 4.x, etc.)
I switched to VMWare Fusion 3 and I couldn't be happier. It is feels more like a Mac program and more stable than Parallels.
March 16 2010 at 2:22 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyVMWare is also faster at everything else (other than 3d) - I use both, all the time because I have to, if I had to choose, and didn't play games, I'd choose Vmware 3 for everyday uses.

When moving VM environments around and they finally work the way I need them, its hard for me to look back unless there are major improvements on the other platform.

March 16 2010 at 1:31 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI have Fusion v2.x Is it possible to boot from a USB stick in this 3 or this new beta? I can't do this in v2.
I'll have to give this a spin when I get home.
