Amazon stealthily releases Kindle app for Mac

The app allows you to download Kindle books you already own, and read them at leisure on your Mac; synchronization of your progress through the book is automatic, and will keep track with your Kindle or iPhone reading. It displays your bookmarks and highlights from your Kindle reading sessions, but doesn't let you create new highlights. You can adjust font size and line length to suit your visual acuity; turning pages is accomplished by using the scroll wheel on your mouse, or with the arrow keys.

It's definitely no-frills, but it's good to see that the Mac app for Kindle reading is finally seeing the light of day, although it's too bad PowerPC and Tiger users are left out of the fun. Thanks, Amazon... now, about that iPad app...

If you want to try out the Kindle app while lacking an actual Kindle (or the iPhone app), and you don't want to invest in costly ebooks, no worries; Glenn Fleishman at TidBITS points out that there are scores of free titles available for download, including some excellent public-domain classics.

Thanks Chris!

I guess it's just a matter of personal preference but I use Kindle reader for iPhone all the time. It's especially useful for things like waiting for an oil change or an appointment. My wife had the same comment about "too small to read" while we were waiting for a concert to begin. I held my iPhone next to her concert program. The text size was identical. "Oh" said she.

It seems fine; no frills is the right way to go. Amazon still seems to have one big advantage over the upcoming iBookstore: its 'Whispernet' syncing across multiple devices. Apple has been silent on offering anything similar, i.e. an app for the Mac and iPhone which would allow you to pick up where you left off and read a few pages of your book on those devices. If you read a lot, you'll learn to appreciate how useful this feature is; it also generally is more in line with the shift of content to the 'cloud' so that we can access it from multiple places and pick up where we left off (e.g. MobileMe). Maybe Apple will eventually allow books purchased on the iPad to be read on the Mac and iPhone (and sync), but until then I'm sticking with the Kindle store (especially if there's a Kindle app for the iPad, which seems more than likely).

I'd release it quietly, too, if I was a huge company that released an app that looks like a child made it in 1995.

I like my Kindle app for iPhone, but this is fugly and featureless!

You really think Apple will let Amazon put their app on the iPad? You don't think Apple will pull the "duplicates features already found in native apps" card when Amazon tries to submit an iPad reader? Get real. There's about as good of a chance of that as there is of an "Amazon MP3 Download" app showing up on the iPod Touch.

Erm, how could the kindle run apple apps? It doesn't use OSX and it has an e-ink screen... The kindle can definitely show PDFs and a wide range of other documents (which occasionally need reformatting into Kindle format) there are also sites which convert copyright (and cost)-free books from the Gutenberg project to Kindle format, so it is a fairly open device really, considering the publishers in general will require DRM.

It would be cool if it actually worked. I can't log in to register it.

@MichaelRose: They didn't bother to send out an emails to people, like myself, who asked to be notified upon it's release.
