iPad Camera Connection Kit available for order, shipping in late April

No explanation was given for the absence of the Camera Connection Kit in the original list of iPad accessories, although the company may have held back the SD and USB connectors that make up the kit for component quality testing.
Among the other accessories for the iPad, the VGA Adapter and Standard Dock will be available on April 3rd and the iPad case is scheduled for mid-April. The Keyboard Dock is showing late April availability, while the iPad 10W USB Power Adapters won't make it to your home or office until sometime in May.

Many people making pre-orders or reservations for iPads were concerned when the iPad Camera Connection Kit didn't show up on the Apple...

While I can see where you are going with the request for a USB port, I wonder why we consider USB to be important? In an age of wireless communication devices, why would we want to consider continuing to have to find the USB cable to attach devices to our iPad? Rather, I would much prefer to see Bluetooth and WiFi used for doing tasks like transferring pictures from a camera to my iPad. Yes, you can achieve faster data transfer speeds with a cable but wireless communication would be so much more convenient and the iPad is all about convenience computing.
On that topic, I wonder whether those WiFi SD memory cards will work with the iPad...
Can I assume that when displaying a RAW image that the iPad will show the JPEG preview rather than the RAW file itself? Viewing/editing RAW images on an iPad sounds like a job that it doesn't have the horsepower for.

Or even an external hard drive?
Next question, would it be possible to make a firewire accessory to transfer HD video from a camera and edit it with an iMovie like application?
It strikes me that the possibilities are endless with a dock connector and if they can do it for photo files from an SD card or straight out of a camera with a USB port, at the very least, we will see all of that happen in the jailbreak community. The sad part is we will have to wait a year for it, then a new iPad will come out, then we'll have to wait for the new iPad PRO version of the jailbreak because the hardware is in someway changed, BUT Apple will have added ONE of the new features we've wanted, and it will be done the RIGHT way. And so on and so forth until everything we want is in an iPad. It's a new product....see you April 3
Does anyone know if one of those multi-card readers can be plugged into the USB adapter, allowing other types of cards (like CF) to be read?
If so, it seems like it would have made more sense to include one of those as the 2nd piece of this kit rather than the SD only reader.
It's possible depending on the need for drivers. It will be interesting to see. I have a few PC CF units I will try. I'm also going to try connecting an external HD to see what functionality I can get out of that and a jumpdrive.

March 27 2010 at 9:12 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySurely it's not impossible, maybe expensive to produce, but certainly not impossible.
iPhone OS 3.0 added the ability for manufacturers to build accessories that interface with aps, the TomTom kit as an example, I believe.
Hopefully we'll see a lot more things along these lines in the, near, future.
I have the iPod USB Camera Connector and I was wondering if it is the same as the new one for the iPad. I plugged it into iPhone and was told that the device was not supported.
Let's see what happens with the iPad / new iPhone firmware.
So it's actually two things for one low price? Wow.
Curious to see whether this works to connect your iPhone too. Probably won't, because you can "just send your pictures to your iPhone via email. It's that easy."
@joanna Yes, one that won't work with an iPad. Please troll less.

In all fairness, it is a point that Apple's solution to the problem is considerably more expensive than the solution would cost on a normal computer by virtue of the only expansion option being a Dock Connector. If a USB port was available on the iPad then Apple's solution would unlikely be bought very much simply because it would represent poor value for money. Technically, there is no reason why the iPad could not have a USB port on it and therefore use standard USB memory card readers since such devices would work fine on a Mac. Using the Dock Connector instead does look to me like a means of inflating prices for accessories.
Any word on iPhone compatibility?
March 27 2010 at 6:11 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe USB Camera Connection adapter for iPad is identical to the one made a few years ago for the iPod. I hope they are the same and it will be enable in next iPhone OS.
