Four made-for-iPhone headsets from Sony
Sony has introduced four new sets of earphones designed for the iPod/iPhone: Three earbud and one over-the-ear style. Engadget reports that only the MDR-EX38iP ($39.99 USD, pictured) is available now. The other three models -- the DR-EX300iP ($99.99 USD), MDR-E10iP (No price given), and the DR-V150iP ($39.99 USD) -- are expected to be released in May. The earbuds will feature in-line volume controls, built-in microphones, and different colors for the MDR earbuds. They are powered by Neodymium drivers that range from 9 to 13.5 mm. The DR-V150iP is aimed toward DJs, and has a 30mm ferrite driver.
The MDR-E10iP will come in pink, gold, blue, or grey; the MDR-EX38iP is available in black and white.

Looked at Sony's site, and the ones listed in the article with the picture for 39.99 do NOT have a mic. The more expensive ones do. If I am wrong, I'm sorry but that's just what I see on Sony's site. Of course, I'm happy that there's a better performing, similarly priced option for the iPhone earbuds.

Plenty of bass and the highs are a little piercing at first, so just turn the EQ to 'Treble Reducer' until they fully break in (about 6 hours of use). Yes, double clicking forwards to the next track and triple clicking rewinds the beginning of the track. Yes, the mic is on there and it works really well with my 3Gs and it handles calls as well as the Apple stock earbuds does.
All in all, a good price for a good improvement on the stock earbuds. Recommended!
The regular MDR-EX300's are amazing, one's with an iPhone remote for $20 more? AWESOME! I am going to get these (DR-EX300iP), too bad they don't come in white... :(

March 29 2010 at 4:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI bought my MDR-EX38iP nearly two months ago from Amazon.co.uk for about £23. Far better than the Apple originals, and does all the same stuff (single, double and triple click, voice control etc.).
I do prefer the centre 'dip' of the Apple version though - far easier to find than the little ridge in the Sony.
It should be noted that the clicker/remote is on the left ear cord for the MDR-EX38iP. They're pretty good for $40, but I wish the remote was on the right ear like the Apple ones.

I've been using the standard $40 buds equivalent to the MDR-E38iP for over a year. I always wondered when they'd make an iPhone version!
Any idea if the Sony Ericsson HBH-IS800 Bluetooth headset will be "fixed" so volme can be controlled when using an iPhone?
March 29 2010 at 1:02 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDoes Sony still use those stupid cords that need to be wrapped behind the neck?
March 29 2010 at 10:54 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyJust ordered the MDREX38IP, delivered tomorrow. I'll post a mini-review here. I read they're fully 3GS compatible.
I personally like the cord that goes over the neck as it's easy to take one bud out without it and speak without it dropping to waist level, but these are 1.2m Y-shaped according to Sony so not the over-the-neck type.
Does these have the button (for double, triple-click)?

I'm excited about these. I hate the Apple branded ear buds as they don't last, and my ones with the microphone that came with my 3GS just broke, so I'll pick up these. Plus, being Sonys, these should sound great.
I have the MDR-EX38iP set and they work quite well. $40ish at the Apple Store. They're more reliable than the VModas that failed on me in January.

FWIW they sounded great.
