10.6.3 update makes Snow Leopard blood-free

When you compare the snow leopard that graces the front of the Mac OS X Snow Leopard box with the same picture that's in your Mac's built-in desktop pictures, you'll notice a very subtle difference... assuming you're running a version of Snow Leopard prior to 10.6.3, that is. In earlier versions of Snow Leopard, the big cat in the OS's desktop pictures has some slight flecks of blood on its lower jaw, and its lower teeth are also slightly visible. The same picture has been "cleaned up" for the front of the Snow Leopard retail box, as well as the install disc itself; the blood has been removed, and the snow leopard's lower teeth have been Photoshopped out. I guess Apple thought that the original image was a little too menacing for its marketing purposes?

Left: Friendly neighborhood salescat. Right: Soulless, enraged killing machine?

Well, the sanitization has spread into the desktop pictures on the Mac, because after installing the 10.6.3 update, the snow leopard desktop picture in your Library/Desktop Pictures/Nature folder has been changed to match the "kinder, gentler" version on the retail box and install disc. When you zoom in really close, you can see that the Photoshop work they did on the poor cat's mouth when they hid its fangs was kind of a hackish job, too. Click "Read More" to see some closeups of the unkindness done to this noble carnivore.

Original: Just back from lunch. Mmmm, ibex is tasty.

Photoshopped: What have you done to my teeth?!

Your blur tool privileges are REVOKED, sir.

Umm seriously? Get with the program guys...this is REALLY OLD NEWS. A **ahem** other site broke this back when Snow Leopard first came out. Only 6 months behind no big deal...

and WHO CARES ANYWAY! It's called marketing to consumers. It doesn't look great if your box has an animal with blood on it's mouth sitting on the shelf of your local Apple store. Marketing 101 here. welcome.

If this post had been about the blood being removed from the retail box, then it would indeed have been REALLY OLD NEWS. That's not what this post was about -- as its title and content clearly indicate, it was about the blood also being removed from the desktop picture as of the 10.6.3 update, which did not come out six months ago.

Thanks for the post. I found it interesting. Not sure why there are so many haters out there, but don't sweat it. It was quick, fun, and interesting read.

For the haters: Really? Get a life. Learning the extent to which Apple goes to perfect it's products and image should be an MBA course in and of itself.

I really don't see any blood at all in the first version. It just looks like the same spotted pattern that he has on the rest of his fur, but in a *slightly* more reddish brown color. In any case, I would go along with the theory that they just wanted to make the color more uniform.

Also, people saying this doesn't matter.... well we all know it isn't the most epic story ever told, but if you're a mac / apple fan, and you like news blurbs big and small related to the industry and updates / goings-on, this is kind of a funny little story to read. I enjoyed it. I appreciate basically any amount of work done to let me know things I otherwise have absolutely no time to track down on my own, big or small. It's kind of their job!

They also reshaped the chin. I went ahead and added the original back into my Nature folder and went back and forth between the new and old and one big hunk of the poor cat's ear is missing too! The smudge job on the mouth/teeth is pretty terrible though. Also TUAW is fine, quit yer bitchin.

Big deal! The alleged blood is barely noticeable anyway. Why does someone care enough about this to waste so much time writing about it?

Not to be too picky, but I searched and searched the original for any evidence of "fangs"; I could not find them. I found incisors, which no one I know has ever deemed to be very frightening. I would love to see a SL with fangs, both figuratively and literally.

Are these fangs or photoshopped:

Shame they didn't use my snow leopard photos, this one is eating a pigeon for lunch, then he gets a feather stuck on his lips!

That second one's pretty badass, man. I just might start using that myself when I upgrade my main machine to SL. :)

Old news. Really. Gizmodo reported on it in August 2009.

The teeth are blurred, just as you point out. It's not new to 10.6.3.

I bet the 10.6.3 update package doesn't even contain the image.

Sorry, you're incorrect.

As I stated in the article, all versions of Snow Leopard prior to 10.6.3 contained the "bloody leopard". 10.6.3 has replaced the "bloody leopard" with the "clean leopard". The only reason I put the pictures in here was so people would know what I was talking about; I'm well aware that the "cleaned up" version has been on the box from day one.
