iPad Wi-Fi issues continue to irritate

This morning, we spotted this write-up on Apple 2.0 about dealing with iPad Wi-Fi issues. Since this is the iPad's number one usability issue -- poor Wi-Fi throughput and lost connections -- users are on the prowl for solutions, even ones that may sound a little offbeat. In this case, one correspondent who was experiencing the specific issue of "no connection when waking from sleep" found that his woes became bygones with a quick tweak: he turned his display brightness back up, after having lowered it earlier. It sounds a bit like Cargo Cult troubleshooting, but with a new device and a new set of quirks and workarounds to experiment with, some strange remedies might just turn out to be valid. (For years, I used the freezer and firm thwack hard drive recovery methods to great effect, regardless of the strange stares and annoyed memos from the kitchen staff.)

Apple has posted a number of Wi-Fi support links over at its discussion board. According to the company, reconnection issues may occur when working with dual-band routers that use similar network names and different security settings for each network band. Low and intermittent signals may be due to distance from a Wi-Fi hotspot or multiple WEP keys, and the standing recommendation is to try repositioning the router, the iPad or both.

If you've tried these fixes, or other Wi-Fi workarounds, let us know below.

I had reconnection errors as well after sleep. I had also changed my contrast to low, then it occurred. After i turned by contrast back to about 30%, the wifi functioned fine again.

i got a 16g 3g after waiting a long 2 weeks

got a nights use out of it woke the next day to find no wifi or bluetooth..

rebooted to a 'connect to itunes' screen.. had to restore.

tried restoring several times in several ways (new & backups)

tried clearing all my settings

nothing worked, both wifi & bluetooth still dead... so much so they are 'greyed out' in settings & I can't even access those sections.. all it says is 'not available'

time to goto the apple store & see if i can get it swapped out (currently 2 week wait list to buy an ipad, how much longer will I have to wait to replace one?)

*sigh*..

Has anyone tackled any parental control issues? Mobicip as an excellent App to control internet access, however, how do you stop your kid from reseting the IPAD through their itunes account and erasing all of your restrictions?

I'm in London using an Huawei E5830 Wifi 3G modem. iPad works fine until it goes standby then I have to disable the iPad's Wifi and re-enable for it to work. Other devices on the modem connect fine. I've tried reseting network settings so it's the only network the iPad knows about. No joy. Tried changing the encryption to WPA, then WPA2, then WPA/WPA2. No joy.

Odd thing is that the iPad show full strength signal when this happens.

I seem to have fixed mine by removing the TKIP key in the WPA2 encription in the router. I was running AES and TKIP both. I went to AES ONLY and the issue went away. Maybe it can't handle both being thrown out there at it?

Mine was working okay in several different locations until Wednesday. Now it keeps dropping and keeps asking me to enter in my password. It's getting really annoying....almost annoying as the persistent Macbook wifi problems that I had a year or so ago.

I'm definitely experiencing problems with wildly fluctuating signal. It's frustrating. I can hold my iPad right next to my macbook pro and iPhone 3GS, and see that its got a pathetic signal in comparison. It is unreliable as a connected device in my most comfortable reading room :-(

I've got two dual-band Airport Extreme base stations on either side of my house. I've tried assigning unique names to the 5GHz and 2.6GHz bands, and selecting manually between them all.

No mater what I try, the iPad will not maintain a strong signal in specific rooms. I've not had problems with dropped connections, just with wild fluctuations between strong and very weak. When I move into the room where the base station is, the fluctuation goes away.

Definitely seems to be a signal reception issue with the iPad. I sure hope it's fixable via software.

I've remedied this problem at my home by changing my wireless encryption from WEP to WPA2. I went from dropping my connection every 20 minutes to never dropping it at all. Can someone else give this a try and see if they have similar results?

Did it occur to Apple to connect the antenna to the aluminum case? Then it, and you, would be the antenna.

Bah! My iPhone 3G has had dodgy wi-fi since day one with my Airport Extreme (N). It's the same anywhere though - G or N - if I put it in my pocket and take it out it has to find the network again. My honking great mains powered Macs have no trouble. I've come not to expect portable devices (including an employer-provided Dell laptop) to have decent wi-fi.
