DIY coolness: a duct tape iPad sleeve and two clever docks
Ahhhh, the refreshing ingenuity of TUAW readers!Frank Hsueh might have been out of quid after buying his iPad, or he perhaps he just likes the texture of duct tape. As Frank noted in an email to TUAW this morning, he made an iPad sleeve out of nothing but a bubble envelope, duct tape, double-sided tape, and an Apple sticker from an iPod shuffle.
Frank used up his roll of double-sided tape securing the inner bubble padding, so he used the tape core to make an iPad stand. As Frank said, it's "perfect for movie watching or notes typing (with wireless keyboard) in landscape mode."
Another TUAW reader, Wilson Lam, had an even more green solution for an iPad stand -- while he's waiting for a stand from Quirky, Wilson found that a cardboard cup holder from a fast-food restaurant could be turned into a utilitarian iPad stand.
Check out the gallery below for more photographic evidence of these fun DIY projects.

Duct tape comes in several colors, including black, brown, white and metallic. Even hot pink.
When I inherited two identical gen 3 iPods, I covered the back of one of them with black duct tape to make it easy to distinguish, as well as to give it some protection. The black duct tape looked surprisingly like leather, and nobody ever suspected it wasn't. It was also very easy to trim with precision using an artist's knife. Its attractiveness was a tossup compared to the untaped iPod, and the tape certainly took up less space than a case would have.
That said, I think I'll pass on this implementation. It's one thing to use a few inches of duct tape. A wide expanse of it is another thing altogether.
That's funny...the original prototype for the Quirky stand/case (called the Cloak) that was just mentioned also prominently featured duct tape. You can see the original video design pitch for that IPad case at http://www.thequirkycloak.com.
I found another nice solution for an iPad stand: http://webdesktoplife.com/post/513291136/the-perfect-ipad-stand-you-probably-have-one

I have video of it on You Tube

Completely underwhelmed!
Not because of the iPad case or "dock" but because it actually received "air time".
And pushing quriky - which is a "if-you-can-get-someone-to-hit-our-site-you-can-get-paid" clap trap "redneck"way of earning .0000000000002 cents per hit. Just watch those cheques come in, folks!
I have seen better DuctTape design and "manufacturing" on Make.
@Maurice - great idea! I just may try it.
Thanks.
Cheers from Downunder!
From what I've read just dropping your iPad while sitting on the couch can damage it. Someone reported that their screen went wacky just falling the 2 foot or so off their couch onto a carpeted floor. Sounds like the big screen doesn't like any abuse at all. I think he maybe should have included a viewing window so he can leave it in their all the time.
Anyone else have an issue after a minor drop??
Pathetic and unimaginative. At least post something like a nice knitted wool cover or something. Duct tape is red neck.

Spring the $0.69 for this stand http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/886149/Office-Depot-Business-Card-Holder-Black/ . And I know I'd feel better if I dropped my iPad while it was in a $15 netbook case rather than $10 worth of duct tape.
Ah ok, cool. So u wanna wrap a $500+ device in bubble wrap and Duct Tape just so u can look poor. Totally cool with me. I try and be open minded.
But seriously, if u gonna get an iPad, at least try and get a proper case. iPad is a good device, both the user and the iPad deserve better.
An inanimate object *deserves* better?
These are cool original ideas that are both effective and make use of re-used material. I think its great!
No wonder why we're in such an environmental disaster if everything deserves brand spanking new processed material shipped from halfway around the globe to keep it comfy.
@Ben, Agreed.
