Hackintosh-friendly Dell Mini 10v discontinued

The Dell Mini 10v, choice of netbook hackintosh owners everywhere, has apparently been discontinued as of a week ago. I discovered that today when I couldn't find any on Dell's site, and confirmed it with a live chat with a support representative who told me it was discontinued last week. A message was left for Dell's Media Relations team but was not immediately returned.

Dell's naming system is confusing, so it would be easy to see the "Mini 10" and think that it is available, but the "10v" has a chipset that works with Mac OS X; the regular Mini 10 does not.
Coincidentally, last night I setup my first Dell Mini 10v running Mac OS X. I had my Snow Leopard DVD, the free Netbook Installer application, the instructions from Gizmodo, and an 8GB USB thumb drive; setting this up could not have been any easier. The results are pretty cool, if you are willing to accept the obvious tradeoffs inherent in a netbook.

Today I even ran Software Update, and have the beast running 10.6.3 without a hitch.

As of this writing, there are still a few refurbished models available at Dell's outlet. Although the Mini 10v has been a hackintosher's dream machine, I have no doubt that other computers will come along which prove equally as hackintoshable (I realize that these are made-up words).

Update: A Dell spokesperson tells TUAW that the product was naturally end-of-lifed. Intel launched its Pine Trail Atom processor last year; Dell will be refreshing the mini line with that updated processor. The spokesperson could not clarify the degree to which updated units would be Hackintoshable.

There are plenty of Dell mini 10v's still available at http://www.dell.com/outlet

I bought the Nickelodeon version and have been very happy with it. I installed 2GB of memory and a Bluetooth adapter. Everything works great - it is a perfect 10-inch MacBook. The trackpad is disappointing, but usable once you get used to it (and I have a Logitech Bluetooth mouse that obviously works a lot a better).

Hint: use a little Sharpie on the inside of the palmrest so you don't get blinded by the way-too-bright power/sleep/low-battery LED.

Hackinminis suck, especially when the OS itself is designed for >=13" screens. Other netbooks aren't too much fun, either.

I just bought a 10v from Dell's refurb site 10 minutes ago. I checked last night, and I saw one left. I didn't get it, said I'll check tonite, and if it is still there, I'll buy it. So now... there are 3 pages of 10v's, and I'm not talking the Nickelodeon ones. I got the cheapest, at $259, and also sprung for the Red/Black reversible case for $19. Should get it in about 3-6 days.

Hackintosh, here I come!!!!

My story: I failed to pull the trigger on one of these back in January, changed my mind to buy one in March, but they had already been pulled from the Canadian site. I wound up buying one of the refurbed Nickelodeon models (figured the kids would like the "slimed" graphics) through dell.com. Had it shipped to my father-in-law in Florida, who then shipped it via UPS (ouch) to me in Canada.

Once I finally had it though, making it a 10.6.3 hackintosh was very easy. My thanks to all the developers who have put the time and effort into making the compatibilities possible.

Final tally: $320 (computer + FL tax) + $30 UPS shipping to Canada + $35 Ontario and Canada tax + $50(!) UPS "fee" + $30 Snow Leopard disc = $465 CDN.

Would I do it again? Probably not, given the hassle and expense of the purchase.

The mini 9 set the standard for easily "hackintoshed" netbooks I think. MIne has a 64g SSD and was cheap enough to just keep in my vehicle all the time. It doesn't get used much since I received my iPad though.

the Dell Mini 10 can be hackintoshed....granted it does have some limited features but you can load OSX on a Dell Mini 10, and there is a work in progress about loading the new Dell Mini 1012 with OSX also....
