The United States of Apple

Also note that Apple fans tend to stick to urban areas for the most part -- there is a nice big oasis of Mac fans in Colorado and Nevada, but we wonder if the lower population density in those places makes the results a little weird. Also notice the lack of Apple ownership in the south -- Louisiana is not Mac country, apparently.

You can check out the full list of all 206 cities here. You'll need to register to download the results (PDF), but it's worth the look. For those of you who don't want to wait, the top five Mac-centric cities are: San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, CA; Boston, MA; San Diego, CA; New York, NY; and Washington, D.C. And since it's my second-home, I'll list the sixth, too: Chicago, IL.

Isn't it ironic that these areas also have the worst AT&T cell phone coverage as well. http://deadcellzones.com/att.html

I don't understand how Florida isn't at least orange, if not red.

Florida has more Apple stores than any other state but California. If anything, at least the Orlando, Tampa, Miami, and Jacksonville areas should be orange/red.

Why is San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose considered to be one city? They are each large cities in their own right.

I would directly correlate that with the fact that Apple has not shown much desire to place themselves in the South. We have 1 store here in KY. Some states have none, or are only in highly populated urban areas. If you want proliferation of product, you have to bring product to the people, and you have to have those more knowledgeable about and less biased against Apple products than your average Best Buy lackie.

People don't buy Apple products in Louisiana? Who would've guessed? There's one in the entire state here. I live in the middle of Louisiana and the closest Apple store to me is in Texas. That one is *still* four hours away as opposed to the almost 5 it takes to get to the one in Louisiana. I'm not sure what my point was here. Maybe it was to rant about the Apple Stores being so far away. I've got a 3GS that I want to take in to have it swapped out due to cracking by the USB dock connector, but yeah I'm not driving on an eight hour trip to get that done.

I know the feeling. I'm from Shreveport. I think an Apple Store would do quite well here.

"and how many teens have you seen without an iPod?"

*raises hand* Quite a few people in our area have Zunes, myself included. We're far outnumbered by the Touches and Nanos, of course.

Our nearest Apple store is..about 45 miles away.
