Pilots: Take your iPad flying with the Tech Board iPro Kneeboard

With its beautiful display, capacious storage, and hundreds of thousands of apps, the iPad is an instant hit with both professional and private pilots. The iPad is much more readable than an iPhone, and it's easy to take PDF files of sectional and terminal area charts with you on the device.

As with any electronic device in the cockpit of an airplane, pilots want to make sure that the iPad is secured while in flight so that it doesn't become a projectile in turbulence or abrupt maneuvers. They also want it right at their fingertips for instant reference. Take those seemingly conflicting requirements and what do you get? The Tech Board iPro Kneeboard from For Pilots Only.

The all-metal iPro looks like it could withstand a CFIT (controlled flight into terrain), and includes a hinged cover that doubles as a clipboard for jotting non-digital notes. It's padded on the inside to protect the finish of your iPad, and there's an opening for a charger should you need to top off the iPad in flight. Like all kneeboards, the iPro has a strap that fastens around the pilot's upper thigh to hold the board in place. Kneeboards have been used for years by pilots for holding onto objects during flight, but the combo of the iPro and iPad are sure to make this a must-have accessory for pilots.

We'd love to hear from TUAW readers who are pilots. How are you using the iPad in the cockpit? Leave your comments below.

In response to comments from Devon and Mezrow, no, the price of the iPro kneeboard is not based on the hype for iPad products nor on the fact that it's used in aviation. If it was for any other market, the price would remain the same. Pricing on this iPad kneeboard is based solely on the manufacturing costs. It would be great if they could be produced more cheaply, but until they're selling in very large numbers, each will be hand made. The precision construction makes it very labor intensive and expensive to build. It is truly a top-quality product and a lot of pilots are already enjoying them.

I just looked at the price. Typical. If it were made to use in a car, it would be $60, but since it's for aviation use, it's almost triple that price.

I'm a corporate pilot, and I've been using the iPad solidly in my job since it was delivered. The main app I use, ForeFlight HD, is a prime example of how an app that delivered marginal functionality on the iPhone/iPod Touch platform can be upgraded into full functionality with the larger screen real estate and processing power of the iPad. FF HD gives me access to airport information, frequencies, and charts through onboard storage, and access to weather updates when connected to the Internet. If I need to do some future planning in. The cockpit (like figuring out the details of adding a leg to our flight, which airport to use, if it has suitable instrument approaches, what kind of fuel they offer, etc), all of he relevant information is contained in a single app, instead of spread across three or four different books.

Additionally, the little side jobs required in my line of work (filing flight plans, checking for flight prates in email, entertaining myself while waiting in airports, etc) are made that much easier with the iPad. Instead of carrying my briefcase with MacBook Pro, per adaptor, Kindle and all of the miscellaneous stuff that gets trapped in it, I now just carry my iPad and iPhone, and pack power adaptors for each in my overnight bag if I'm going to be away for more than a day.

Besides, sitting around in public places with an iPad has made me an instant celebrity of sorts. Nothing beats demonstrating the device to a military pilot who arrived in a F/A-18 and having him say, "Now, THAT'S cool."

So I have to turn my iPad off till we get to 10,000 feet but the pilot can use one while he lands the plane?

I was going to post the same thing about the price. I'll stick to my $30 knee board right now thank you. I think they're trying to ride the hype of the iPad and also going with the "they're pilots, they pay 2-3 times as much for everything anyways, lets overcharge" attitude.

I would not use that in my plane, but I'd let my passenger use it. Kneepads cause me to sweat too much and they never stay straight.

I would love to have this just for work...I could have notes on the clipboard part in front and have the iPad to do my work too...too expensive tho...

maybe someone will make something less expensive and not so specialized like that...as if any place can keep iPad accessories in stock...lol

As an airline pilot, I enjoy using my iPad to distract myself while I overshoot airports, and while sitting on the tarmac for hours on end (needlessly, mind you, just to play with my iPad). It's really great! In fact, just last week, I was so distracted that I didn't even notice on of my engines was choking on volcanic ash! Man I love this iPad!

NOTE: I am not an airline pilot, nor do I own an iPad.
