Apple offers Keynote for iPad advice

Several weeks ago, we described how Keynote for the iPad suffers from formatting and other issues when sharing presentations with a Mac. No support for custom fonts, disappearing presenter notes, and trouble with screen ratios were some of the problems we encountered. As if they were listening, Apple has published a support document on Keynote for iPad best practices.

It's a nice overview. Apple suggests which theme to use (options include Black, Craft, Harmony and Parchment), the proper size (1024 x 768) and fonts available to both platforms. Fonts not available on the iPad will be replaced with Helvetica.

As for images, Apple recommends scaling them to their intended size before adding them to a slideshow (kind of a hassle), and sticking with the PNG format.

There are a few more tips listed, but we'll let you read for yourself. Hopefully these suggestions will improve the experience for those who wish to present from their iPads.

My whole plan was to get an iPad just for Keynote. A light alternative to my laptop... I could pull out to at lecture presentations, plugin to my projector and voila.

Just ain't so... will be waiting on version 2.

I suspect we will start to see people realizing that they have been bamboozaled into a device that isn't really suited to the professional uses they had in mind or where lead to believe are possible.

This isn't to detract from the machines good points just that you can only expect so much out of a machine with so little RAM.

They should just fix the app, or at least provide a "HD"/Pro version

Does anyone know if the iPad(with VGA cable) can be connected to a SVGA(800x600) projector?

There shouldn't be any problem, especially if you're sticking to the 800x600 ratio.

How about showing us how to automate
"scaling them to their intended size before adding them to a slideshow (kind of a hassle), and sticking with the PNG format. "

The app itself isn't as bad as the disappointment of paying $29.99 for such an abominable implementation of video out for Keynote.

Interesting note on Apple's site... "Printing is currently not available directly on iPad". Does that mean that printing will be available sometime soon?

This implication has been made before and before iPhone 4 came out, people thought it would be included there, but no such luck. My bet is it will come when a central document storing location exists on the iPhone/iPad.

The problem with printing is that nearly all "consumer" printers are "software-based" and don't properly work in Zero-driver mode, even the WiFi ones. Trying to keep it all straight would be a huge waste of time. The "best possible" way would be to include print support thru iTunes but that would require iTunes everywhere. They might be able to put support into Apple wireless products, but then you just move the "driver" problem.

I do enough work with printing from iSeries servers even in "text" mode most "consumer" or even "small business" printers on the market can't handle direct IP attached printing of basic text.... let alone something more. I suppose Apple could push for more PDF IPP printers... but that's an Adobe thing.. oops.

Or they could, you know, make the app itself stop sucking.
