Use the iPad in landscape orientation with the keyboard dock

Using a Bluetooth keyboard with an iPad is terrifically convenient, yet some users dislike that the iPad must be in portrait orientation while docked. Here's how to get around it.

Joe, the self-proclaimed "World's most popular blogging anesthesiologist" used a dock extender cable, the keyboard dock and Apple's iPad case to solve the problem. With the cable attached and tucked neatly through the case, Joe noticed that the case itself slips securely over the back of the dock. Just fold the front back and you'll be able to secure it. He could even adjust to the perfect viewing angle.

Note that the stand-alone dock (without the keyboard) will be much less stable. Also the on/off button must be on the left for this to work because, with the hinged part of the case down, it covers up the keyboard's function keys.

We love it! Well done.

It is nice, I wish I stumbled across this sooner - as I drilled a hole through the dock but in the end simply fell into the same solution.

The nice part is that it can charge the iPad while it sits next to me on the desk. I would never use the keyboard on the couch but comes in handy next to me at the office.

So this sounds like a great idea, what I would like to know though:
(slighty OT)
What are the prospects for using all these new keyboard options on an iPhone? As in putting it on the iPad dock. Or using the camera connection kit which seems to support USB keyboards. Bluetooth is fine, but I really don't want another thing that needs batteries, plus I already have a regular Apple keyboard.

Thanks a lot for checking, Dave. Maybe somehow with a newer iPhone OS or with a jailbreak it could work some time. Keeping my fingers crossed.

the issue is the dock was made for portrait mode. so use a different dock. I snagged a Griffin A frame stand on a lark and it's awesome. I can use it in either mode, when it is portrait there is clearance for the DC cable. and it stands just right for me to have my blue tooth keyboard in place.

The setup reminds me of the Apple IIc form factor...

Here's my solution...

Go to Joann.com and get yourself one of these...

http://www.joann.com:80/joann/catalog/productdetail.jsp?pageName=search&flag=true&PRODID=prd792010

...then buy the normal bluetooth keyboard.

The stand adjusts great for either movie watching or flat for typing (when not using the keyboard), plus the keyboard will fit in a case better because you won't have that annoying dock attached. I feel theree is really no need for the dock since the battery on the iPad lasts for so long...

I find that about 50% of the time I am using my iPad, I am holding it in my lap or in my hands and the other 50%, I am using my bluetooth K/B. I have designed a holder and am building it in my lab/workshop. I wanted something that was portable and would hold my iPad if/when I wanted to watch a movie or video podcast in landscape. This seems like an "just OK" kind of idea but I am sure we will see more as people find more ways to make it comfortable for them.

Nice job. Somebody should put hinges between the Ipad and the keyboard. That way you could fold it up nicely and protect your screen.

Seriously though. People keep telling it is not a netbook and how you shouldn't compare it and the cheer for essentially Turing it into one?
