Eye-Fi announces Apple-exclusive Geo X2

On Tuesday, Eye-Fi announced a new Apple-exclusive product as well as expansion of its hotspot service plan.

Their new device, the Eye-Fi Geo X2, will only be sold at Apple Stores starting in May. It brings faster uploads of photos and video (via a new 802.11n transmitter) directly to iPhoto and MobileMe (Picasa, Facebook, and 20+ others). Its capacity is 4GB.

One cool new feature is what they're calling Endless Memory, which allows users to have Eye-Fi automatically make space available on the card after photos and videos have been safely uploaded. Neat! It also does automatic geotagging so your shots will show up in iPhoto's "Places" feature with no problem.

Eye-Fi also announced the expansion of its hotspot service plan through a partnership with Devicescape, allowing X2 users to upload photos internationally and on thousands more networks.

If the US$49.99 Connect X2 doesn't float your boat and the $99.99 Explore X2 is a bit too pricey, consider the $69.99 Geo X2. A few TUAW bloggers have used Eye-Fi cards with rave reviews. Look for one next month.

Endless Memory as a name for a storage device feature? You are not helping Eye-Fi.

"It also does automatic geotagging..." (!?). Isn't that a little too much credit? I mean, unless the card has a built in GPS it must be a case of "not corrupting already geotagged pics". Or have I missed something?

I am completely disturbed by this announcement and have made my upset known to the company thru a couple different avenues on their web site

being where I am I know that there are ample Apple Store locations where people will be able to get this product...but there are way too many places in the States where this product will never be found or even available and that upsets me

as an Apple Retail Sales partner (my work is not me) I don't think it is a good thing that customers wanting this type of product will only be able to get it at an Apple Store...personally I know there are many many people that don't like the Apple Store...I'm not that fond of it myself...it's great if you have nothing important to do at the time but if you really need something done...it can be a nightmare...Apple Stores are amazing places and I know in my area they are crazy inside...but that is also why so many people would prefer not to have to go to one unless they absolutely have to

so I placed my views with the company...if they want to offer it at Apple Stores that’s great...but I am responsible for one too...and they want the same level of product experience they can get at an Apple Store but without the chaos involved with one...even tho where I am is within the walls of another company that doesn’t make it any less of an Apple Store...

2cents given...feel free to flame me as you wish...wont change my feelings on the subject

Okay. *flames*

Hehe just kidding. That was kind of dumb though to put that you don't mind being flamed (I hate that term, by the way).

Anyhow, I think you're forgetting that if people don't want to get trampled on by the crazy stampedes in Apple Stores, they can always order online which is much more convenient than walking into any store. Be it the catastrophic Apple Stores or the zen one you manage.

How ironic since the pro x2 does 802.11n -- but won't work w/an apple extreme (using b/g, yes. n, no).

Why would I buy this 4 GB card over the LESS expensive Eye-Fi Connect X2 4GB card??

I would love to see a CF version, too - I have an SD camera, but that's a point 'n shoot I carry when I won't generally have a laptop with me - sort of pointless - and my CF using SLRs aren't going away.

One thing I'm curious about, though - is it true that only the Pro card moves RAW files? If so, that's pretty lame rent seeking.

I've read about the successful use of relatively inexpensive Compact Flash SD card adapters with Eye-Fi units. For you (and anyone else using a CF camera) that might be something worth checking out.

How is this Apple-exclusive?
Sounds more like Apple Store-exclusive to me...

Even in the summary it says 20+ photo services (so not Apple program/service exclusive), and last time I checked, it isn't exclusive to Apple digital cameras (which is something I just made up).
It's not even Apple-branded.

So apart from going to an Apple Store to buy it (and online, and from ebay, etc. before long too), it doesn't seem very exclusive to me...

It's sold exclusively through Apple stores and apple.com.
