Transmit 4 offers new features, faster performance

Transmit is the FTP client by Panic that has won legions of fans (myself included). After 5 years of version 3.x, Panic has finally released version 4.0 with a new UI, faster performance, and a slew of hot new features.

Transmit 4 is a near-total re-write of the application. The most notable change is the UI. Gone is all the white and Aqua-style drop-downs. This version offers a nice path bar and custom icons for your favorites (use theirs or supply your own). There's a new sync button and for the first time, Coverflow and thumbnail view. Finder classics like disclose folders and color-coding are now in place, and the beefed up progress bar tracks both overall progress and individual files. Nice!

I've only used the demo briefly this morning (we'll have a full review up at a later date), but it's noticeably faster than its predecessor. Panic claims a speed increase 25 times greater than version 3, and I don't doubt it. Not only does Transmit seem faster when transferring files, but just moving between directories is very snappy.

The most impressive feature I found during my brief testing this morning is Transmit Disks. This allows you to mount any favorite in the Finder, even if Transmit isn't running. You're free to interact with the disk as you wish once it's mounted. It's quite nice.

As I said, we've got a full review forthcoming. For now, we can say that Transmit 4 is well worth your attention. A sleek, modern look, greatly increased speed and new features like Transmit Disks make version 4 a must-update for all users.

A full license costs US$34. Users of version 3.x may upgrade for $19. Anyone who bought Transmit 3 on or after March 1st, 2010 can upgrade for free.

Having been a beta tester for Transmit 4.0 the improvements from 3 are amazing. While some bugs do still show (hey it's only a .0 release!) I can't stop loving it.

Panic continues to produce amazing products - way to go!

i found unison to be pretty stable and a great upgrade

i'll see how it goes with the new transmit which i was waiting for for a while now... the interface feels a bit too blinged up and it took me a while to find a few options like the folders on top feature which is great (hint.. apple .. hint)

can't wait to check out the file masking - especially useful if you have source files like flas in the same folder as your output files

Well the latest version of Unison is better but still buggy. In my view, the first release of Unison was a joke. It should never have been released. (Read the comments on Macupdate). I really started to loose faith in Panic software. And unlike most newsreaders, you are NOT able to mark threads as read. (You still can in the previous release).

The previous version of Transmit is great. But I will wait until more of the bugs are squashed before I will even consider upgrading.

Panic recently updated Unison as well. But the latest Unison is SO BUGGY I had to go back to the previous version.

It looks like Transmit 4 is ALSO VERY BUGGY. Where is Panic's Quality Control?

I will pass on this BETA quality software for now.

I have been using it for a while today and I am very please with this upgrade. It's nice to see they can make apps as slick as their site.

Just a correction in the article. Panic claims the new version is 25 TIMES faster, not 25%. Kind of a major difference. (Although having used it quite a bit this afternoon, I think your version seems more accurate. Of course, others' mileage may vary.)

It also supports SSH commands now. You can remotely zip/unzip files via SFTP. It makes uploading thousands of files even quicker when you upload as a zip file and then unzip them on your server.

I too have used Transmit for years. BUT....

4.0 is off to a bad buggy start. After downloading the app, I decided to try and upload/sync my laptop files to my idisk account.

in each case I selected to do a sync preview.
During that process when the app started comparing files it crashed immediately. Twice.

There's a bug waiting to be fixed!

I've been trying out the demo -- anyone else having trouble with how it handles smart folder contents? Combining that with a sync-to-remote-directory script would make a roll-your-own backup solution that would ROCK, but at the moment T4 does weird things: opening a smart folder through the T4 interface shows some items that shouldn't be in there and misses some that should.

Downloaded and purchased the upgrade this morning. I've been using Transmit for seven years and it went from awesome to pretty good since about the time Snow Leopard was released. I was having connection issues and there was a known bug affecting folder uploads that hung around for several updates. I was getting pretty annoyed and started looking at alternatives a couple weeks ago.

Nevermind. Transmit 4 is back to awesome. No problems at all, and the Disk feature is wonderful (I can actually export directly from within Aperture without the slowness or bugginess of Uberupload). The only thing I miss is the preview drawer. They need to put it back in.

Great upgrade. Don't even think twice about forking over the 20 bucks.

Unless I've been blind, but finally a "Date Modified" column. That alone makes Transmit a worthy contender is my arsenal. Unless it was always in Transmit 3, and I just overlooked it; same issue in Flow. Perfect timing, as well: I have three projects going on right now... J.
