Steam for Mac beta set for May 12

Steam for the Mac has been given a date: May 12th. We were hoping to see it by the time April ended, but they've pushed back the date to just a few scant weeks from today. So come the second Wednesday in May, you the public will be able to go and pick up the beta and see what the biggest digital distribution system in the world looks like running native on your Mac.

Keep in mind that you'll have to have an Intel Mac running 10.5 or higher (and you might even need a more current OS for some of the games on the system), and of course this is the Steam platform, not all of the games along with it. But at the very least, the official Valve games will be Mac-ported, including the Half Life and Left 4 Dead series, and the very excellent Portal. Should be fun!

Exactly. Even on my Hackintosh, the Orange Box is more or less the sole reason I even have a Windows installation at all.

I also confirm that Steam have already released their Mac beta to selected users.

I highly doubt that this release will be a beta version and will be the completed product. The reason I say that is because they've only recently completed the new framework for the client and I imagine that it's not just a case of porting from Windows but they were developed for both platforms simultaneously.

Between now and may 12th is the complete beta period I believe.

I could be wrong!

Mega meh. Macs are for productive people who get shit done, not video game addicts.

I didn't pay $1500 CAD just for a productivity machine. For that kind of money I expect a lot.

With this however, I can play without using Bootcamp.

Valve have never met a deadline yet - don't expect them to meet this one!

Sucks that the integrated video card in my macbook isn't supported (GMA 950 chipset) :(. hopefully there's a workaround.

We're not on windows anymore... (lol) This sure is a sweet treat for mac users, hopefully the list of games will grow not to mention a price deduction on the premium games. Reactions. http://j.mp/steam-for-mac-released-review
