TUAW's Daily App: Umbrella Today

Last fall, I moved out here to Southern California, and while I don't mean to brag, my concerns about the weather outside have fallen right off of my list of priorities; it's sunny and 70ºF here most of the time. However, back when I lived in Chicago, I had to check and see what the weather was like every day before I went out . While I was interested in the temperature, the conditions, and even the wind speed (it's a Windy City, in case you haven't heard), there was really just one question that I needed answered: Umbrella today?

Umbrella Today is a site that answers that question for you. It's the brainchild of tech consultant firm thoughtbot. All you have to do is punch in your ZIP code, and you will get a yes or no answer as to whether you'll need to bring that umbrella or not. Of course, you're not always near a computer, so they've turned the site into an iPhone app. The app will not only answer the question, but it will even provide scheduled alerts or push notifications when you need to carry that umbrella.

I love it -- it's simple, practical, and effective. The app is US$1.99, but even if you have an issue with that price, you can set up an email alert on the site for free. Still, a one-time payment of $2 is cheap for never being caught empty-handed in the rain again.

I'd rather have an iPhone (or iPad) case that unfolds into an emergency umbrella. Then I'd always have it available. And sometimes you want an umbrella on a sunny day.

"Still, a one-time payment of $2 is cheap for never being caught empty-handed in the rain again."

Looking out a window is even cheaper.

But really, is a little bit of water that big of a deal? I never use an umbrella.

The app is useless for me - here in Seattle, the answer is always "No - Umbrella's are for wimps and tourists."

I usually just look out that big square hole in the side of my house and if there is a big orange thing shining in the sky I leave my umbrella at home. If there are curious, grey things floating in the sky I take my umbrella.

"...there was really just one question that I needed answered: Umbrella today?"

Then you look at any weather site and look at the little picture: if it's got a cloud and drops then you need an umbrealla.

That said, the push notifications might make it worth the money. Then again, I've got an umbrella at work, and one in my car, plus some at home, so it's not really a big deal. More expensive than a $1.99 app but 100% effective and I never need to think about it. If rain is falling as I walk out the door I grab the closest umbrella. :-)

PS: @Tatonka: LOL. Good one.

$1.99 for this is outrageous - it really doesn't even DO anything

I don't know about the app, but the website just scored 10,000 awesome points. If you punch in 90210 as your ZIP, it starts playing a midi of the theme song.

Or you could look at the weather report on TV or in the newspaper.

I can't believe you paid money for this app.

Download "Rail Alert" it's completely free and it does the exact same thing.
