Create keyboard shortcuts to jump to Safari 4 tabs directly

My friend Steve (no, not that Steve) just solved a problem I've had for awhile now: how to jump to a specific tab in Safari using the keyboard. Turns out that it's possible, and it's free, and it works pretty well. What else could you ask for?

The solution comes from Paul Kretek's website where he outlines how to use FastScripts to assign keyboard shortcuts to specific tabs. Paul and Steve both want to use Safari, but they like Firefox's method of numbering tabs 1-9 used together with the command (⌘) key . By default, Safari uses ⌘+[1-9] to jump to bookmarks on your bookmark bar, which I use all of the time so I'm planning to make keyboard shortcuts for tabs control+1-9 instead. (⌘+0 [zero] is used to set the zoom back to original size.)

Who knows, I might change my mind. I had found myself trying to use ⌘+[1-9] for tab switching in Safari because I was already used to tab switching that way in iTerm. The only bookmark keyboard short I use with any frequency is ⌘+1 which I use to invoke Quix which I've written about previously and absolutely cannot work without.

Paul's instructions are very thorough, and although they may look a little complicated, it's something you only need to setup once. Also note that FastScripts is free for up to 10 shortcuts, after that it's US$14.95 for unlimited use.

I like the idea, but didn't want additional software, so I setup the scripts as services using Automator (my new fav toy for procrastinating in the name of creating productivity tools). Two problems. The scripts are slow, and I don't think you can add a keyboard shortcut for a service that already exists for another menu item in the application. I had to compromise with ALT + 1,2,3..10. For those two reasons I doubt I'll remember to use it, and I'll just stick with SHIFT+CMD+LEFT/RIGHT.

Good suggestion though, and thanks for the reminder to checkout Quix. In the name of increased productivity I am stopping all work for 30 mins to mess around with it.

FastScripts did not allow me to change anything in Safari.. The photo shots from the mentioned website were not available to me when i downloaded the program. Now I am trying to get this program off my computer but can't find out where it installed itself...

ughh...

Why add more software? Just use CTRL-TAB like Apple meant it to be.

CTRL-TAB and CTRL+SHIFT-TAB (to move backwards) works just fine unless u have 8-10 tabs open at once, in which case I can understand why CTRL+10 would be faster... But that problem can be solved too if you spread your tabs over multiple safari windows each with 2-3 tabs

I used QuicKeys for adding Command 1-5 for tab selection. Just use the select button by location for each. Works flawlessly. Even supplants Apple's command keys for bookmarks command 1-5. I never liked that feature anyway. : )

I know QK is not free but it's always been an indispensable utility & always worth the upgrade price.

I agree with Mark, as well using Cmd_Shift_Left/Right arrow avoids the conflict with Cmd-Tab being cofigured (in my case) to jump from one Space to another

Cmd-Shift-Left/Right arrow might not be "direct," but they'll easily get you there without reaching for the mouse.

cmd+[1-9] will also get you there without using the mouse.
