Rumor: Nike+ heart rate monitor coming June 1

According to a post by user "Clover" on the Nike+ support forums, Nike will be releasing a Nike+ heart rate monitor to the U.S. market on June 1, 2010. Canada will also see see a June launch date, while other international customers will see the device hitting shelves some time during the summer.

While the fifth generation iPod nano and Apple's own Nike+ iPod user guide makes reference to a Nike+ heart rate monitor, such a device has yet to surface.

Exact features, specifications, and pricing of the Nike+ heart rate monitor were not revealed. However, a good number of heart rate monitors out in the market today are priced in the $50 and higher ballpark, and many require you to use a strap across your chest in order to transmit your heart rate to an accompanying watch.

[via AppleInsider]

The report appears to be credible as Clover's post history indicates that he or she is likely a Nike employee in some capacity.

Updates to the Nike+ iPod kit have been sparse since its January 2006 release, and they've mostly come from the Apple side of the equation. Second generation and higher iPod touch models and the iPhone 3GS, for example, have built-in Nike+ receivers.

As a fitness fanboy, I'm excited about the prospects of a Nike+ heart rate monitor. While I love running, there are times when I can't, either because of weather, my schedule, or just because I want to change things up. A Nike+ iPod-compatible heart rate monitor should help liven things up.

I have had some inside info that there is a product coming out at the end of 2010/start of 2011 which will not just be better than the Micoach or the Nike+, it will be a lot better. Has all the usual stuff – GPS, Heart rate, pace, distance, speed etc with all data downloadable, then advanced mp3 facility, plus some completely new functionality even the Garmin doesn`t have.

It`s not on their site at the moment but I am waiting for this bad boy.

Hopefully this will be half as decent as a professional heart rate monitors from Polar, Suunto or Timex (T5K2xx)...

The good ones have
1) a chest strap (wireless digital transmission) that doesn't require gel
2) can measure your average (resting) heart rate,
3) can measure (calculate?) your maximum heart rate
4) warn you when you are not in your pre-defined target heart rate zone.
5) can upload & graph data history to a pc

and MOST importantly, the battery can be owner-replaced!! Most of the good heart rate monitors must be sent back to the factory for battery replacement!

Do your homework so you don't get burned like I did!

I hope it can connect with Jog Log (http://bit.ly/a5nD6S). I prefer it over RunKeeper.

Seriously, is there any real reason for this outside of professional athletes? I think of myself as a serious athlete, but never would buy this.

I wonder if 3. party apps such as "Run App" which I use can get access to the data from the heart rate monitor.

It would be nice if Apple put the references to this in the public API's.

I think it is problematic if Apple favors some companies (like Nike) with build in hardware, that no one else can use.

will be handy, but also kind of alarming to be monitoring heart rate as you run.. maybe something I don't want to know. I'm a fan of cadence app, keeps my mind on the music that matches my speed. www.cadenceapp.com
