iPod touch with camera shows up in Vietnam

The Apple sieve continues to leak as a new prototype shows up in Vietnam and promptly hits the web. This time, it's an iPod touch with a 2 megapixel camera. For now, only the iPhone and iPod nano have cameras.

Tinhte has the story once again (you'll remember they posted photo and video of a 4G iPhone). In the video above, the prototype is seen running a diagnostic utility, from which we can glean that it's got 64GB of storage, a 2 megapixel camera and a backside illuminated sensor built by Omnivision. It also behaves as expected when connected to a Mac. The "DVT-1" stamp on the back identifies this as a pre-production unit most likely produced for testing.

It was reported by the Associated Press last week that a pair of mobile phone vendors were responsible for the iPhone prototype leak, but it's unclear how this one found its way to Tinhte. What is clear is that Apple's security isn't what it used to be.

What I thought was interesting was the little microphone hole next to the lens. Makes it a bit more like an iPhone, sans 3G antenna.

With my 1st gen iPod Touch I always said the killer additions for me would be, speakers and a camera. Maybe I won't get the new iPhone and save $1000's over the time of a three year contract.

The key detail here (pointed out by MacRumors http://www.macrumors.com/2010/05/19/photos-and-video-of-ipod-touch-with-camera-surface-in-vietnam/) is that this prototype was manufactured back in June last year, before the launch of the 3rd-gen iPod Touch. Nothing new to see, really.

Looks like a current generation prototype, something we've already seen pics of with a camera, rather than a next gen. It if were next gen it would be shaped like the 4G iPhone.

*nods* Also, note that it's running iPhone OS 3.1. That's a dead giveaway right there. If it were the new model it'd be running 3.2 or 4.0.

I was thinking the same thing, why would they not refresh the looks of the iPod Touch. Something smells fishy!

What is this diagnostic utility and why does it not at all look like something Apple would use, let alone ship? I call shenanigans. The camera probably won't be centered (for some reason I feel strongly about that, probably because neither the iPhone nor the iPod nano has a centered camera). Also, I think it would be irresponsible of Apple to NOT include the forthcoming camera updates included on the iPhone. iPod touch users deserve the same improved camera hardware that the iPhone users will get. We run the same apps and have the same needs.

If Steve was really concerned with the iPod touch being the cheapest way to the App Store (his excuse last year for no camera being put in), then maybe he should consider how many apps require or use a camera and give us a quality one (at least as good as is going to be in the next iPhone). And if the next iPhone includes a front-facing camera, then give us one too, so we can use the apps that will take advantage of it.

I still think this looks fake to me though.

The diagnostic utility shown above is exactly what Apple uses.

It's not fake, and Dave got it right when he said, "Apple's security isn't what it used to be."
