Agile Web Solutions takes over development of Knox

Years ago I started using Knox for securing files, folders and drives. It's an easy and very secure way to keep your private files private. This week, long-time developers Marko Karppinen & Co. handed it over to Agile Web Solutions. As Agile is behind the popular 1Password, I think it was a great choice.

In fact, the two utilities work well together: Knox protects your files while 1Password protects your passwords. Knox employs the US Government's Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with 256-bit or 128-bit key length. What that means is that your stuff is safe from the cranky teenager down the block as well as hostile nations. I've used it to secure USB flash drives, as they're so easy to misplace.

Version 2 is available here. It's a useful application that's in good hands at Agile. A 30-day free trial is available, and a single license will run you US$34.95.

Well, I think I found one really interesting feature. It'll expand the size of the vault. Start it out small and just increase it if it needs more space. That's nice.

I'm trying to keep an open mind, but I'm not sure I understand the benefit that truecrypt doesn't already provide.

Is the Knox code public? I personally would not trust any encryption system what doesn't have its code publicly available.

You are entitled to your trust issues. Since it's not free software it seems unlikely they'll release the source... but for other readers, you can look into it-- Agile has serious cred in the security world. 1Password has been serving many thousands of users for a while now, and Agile does a great job improving their products with awesome functionality updates, and have great customer service.

No, I don't work for them. (but I wish I had a job that cool.)

"In fact, the two utilities compliment each other"

Really? They say nice things about each other?

At the risk of sounding like a "me too," what do ANY of these third-party applications offer over Disk Utility, Automator, and a proper understanding of how Spotlight works? Is it just the convenience of putting everything together in one place, like Cocktail does for system preferences? Perhaps, but it sure ain't 35 bucks worth of convenience.

Is it possible for you to write a detailed article by comparing the features of both Knox and Espionage .

By the Knox was being sold at $20 (initial offer) instead of the presently priced $30 . Source : http://macappdeals.com/?p=9005 (Source of source: http://blog.sair.am/archives/2010/05/knox-from-the-creators-of-1password-is-on-43-off/ )

Presumably 1Password and Knox do more than say nice things about each other, in which case they "complement" each other, not "compliment".

Is there any reason I should use Knox over the completely free TrueCrypt? I'm not being snarky, but I really don't see any advantage. TrueCrypt has more features, and seems to offer slightly better encryption methods. The only tradeoff is a slightly less pretty UI.

Espionage does mostly the same thing, and it has application templates to encrypt a particular application's files. And it's cheaper. I don't think it has the Spotlight integration but if I'm going through the trouble of securing my files, I probably know where to find them and don't need to use Spotlight.

Not trying to convince people who are not interested... but if you decide Knox is for you, buy today for %14 discount and use the coupon code iSlayer for an additional %20 discount. Price before discounts $34.95, price after, $23.96. (at least that's what it was for me)

Hope that helps.
