TUAW's Daily App: Space Storm

Space Storm is about as conventional as space shooters get; enemies come into the screen from the right, and your ship flies from the left, blowing things out of the sky with a few different weapons and picking up health or power-ups along the way. In this case, though, conventional is good. The game feels right, and the dual-stick setup will have you navigating your ship around enemies and bullets and even slowing time down with occasional power-ups, in no time.

Boss levels add a little variety to the mix, but basically, it's fly and shoot. It's very simple and pretty darn fun. OpenFeint adds some replayability to the somewhat short game, but a shooter is a shooter. As of this writing, the game is free on a promotion, but if you enjoy a good space shooter, it's definitely worth a couple of bucks.

A game like this requires precise ship control, to line up targets and to avoid collisions, and you simply cannot get that control with a touchscreen D-pad.

Space Storm was actually Open Feint's game of the day two days ago. Today it's a game called "Fluttr".

These other iPhone/iPad games are free today as well:

Here's the review I just submitted to the iTunes Store:

"It's a decent attempt at a side-scrolling shooter, and I can't complain too much since I got it for free, but it's fundamentally flawed.

"A game like this requires precise ship control, to line up targets and to avoid collisions, and you simply cannot get that control with a touchscreen D-pad. Instead, your ship drifts sluggishly around the screen as you try to lock onto enemies that flutter (yes, flutter) toward you. As such, the whole experience is just annoying. It's a darned good thing that you have a life bar rather than the single-collision deaths of classic shooters.

"Furthermore, the lack of tactical options (e.g., no weapon choices, no special attacks, no priority targets) leaves you with nothing to do but clear a path for yourself and keep your life bar filled. Everything is equally dangerous and equally rewarding, so playing doesn't require active decision making. Your brain turns off after just a few levels.

"Altogether, it's one big meh."

I was hoping it was going to be at least a little like Thunder Force or R-Type, but I was sorely disappointed.

Hope they get it better on the next next try.
