Rumor: Next Apple TV will be $99, feature cloud storage
Well part the skies and let the doves descend. It looks like the Apple TV may evolve into a more desirable machine before too long. Quoting a tip that was "confirmed by a source very close to Apple," Engadget reports that the next incarnation of Apple's set top box will feature cloud storage (awesome), the same internals as the upcoming iPhone (meaning an A4 processor!) and be capable of full 1080p HD. Be still our hearts.
They go on to describe it as tiny, "an iPhone without a screen," and costing only US$99. Yes, one hundred bucks. While cloud storage will be the machine's default, those who want to keep things local can use a Time Capsule as a storage component.
This thing sounds like the Apple TV I've personally been waiting for. How soon can we have it, Steve?

Big fucking deal. After spending all this money on the first version and we get no love, all i can say is big deal. He'll, tiheappletv isrefured to as a hobby. Why do I want to invest in something that he isn't even taking seriously? All my current apple tv is good for is streaming boxer on it to watch online content.
Maybe googletv will prove to be better. But on the other hand, I think google just likes shaking up the market too.
I love apple, don't get me wrong. I have went through 4 iPhones, 1 iMac, and I'm writing this on a iPad. And of course I have a appletv.
Just prove to me its nolongera hobby and please take it seriously.
Wow typing on this thing like a keyboard takes some time to Learn to do.

http://www.elgato.com/elgato/int/mainmenu/products/software/EyeTV-3/EyeTV-3-4.en.html
...add in the Live TV streaming facility to the new Apple TV and Windows Media Center just lost the game if you ask me (And I'm very happy with my Media Center, two Xboxes and a Linksys Extender, it just totally blows for Music and Movie playback.

Add app store games with ability to connect iPhone or ipod touch to use as controller with accelerometer and Apple win the TV war. End of.

I can almost envision a next-gen Mini coming with a little holster that clips onto your monitor to become the non-desktop desktop... sort of an unbundled iMac.
The tagline for the ads: "Your life. In your pocket."
@ilkyone,
there is no trouble accessing you iTunes library, the music, music videos, and videos work really well, well unless you purchased any of Apples highly compressed, semi-HD, over priced movies.
Great - I only just brought an appleTV last week - i don't think my wife is going to be too happy!

then when the new one comes out, tell her the new one can do more, and only costs $99...
then move the old one to your man cave... mwuhahahahaha
or, if you can't that play out of it, ask her if something like the apple tv wouldn't be perfect for her parents... give the old one to her parents, get the new one...
there's so many ways to work this situation to an excellent result... win-win for $99? heck, her hairspray and skin cream things cost more than that.
that's nice for you. too bad they killed linux on it.
I don't want a PS3 because it's a power hog and it's not as convenient for me to get at my iTunes content.
Cloud storage for video is irrelevant if your internet can't keep up, we have 4 people in our household, sometimes all watching different things at the same time, most people's internet can't handle that sort of bandwidth day in day out.

The tradeoff with dropping cable and satellite and going with tv via internet is that you will need to jack up your download speed to compensate for the extra traffic. I think its a very reasonable tradeoff, considering how much you will save with not having a fat cable bill each month.
