Some further thoughts on the rumored next Apple TV
Our report this morning that there may be a new Apple TV (based on an Engadget scoop) is going to cause a lot of chatter. A new Apple TV is a step the company has to take, and frankly, if it came out today it would be at least a year late. The article says the project has been in the works for a long time, and the projected price being tossed around is US$99.00! That's a pretty competitive price, but the devil will be in the details. If it's just a vessel to buy from the iTunes store, it doesn't seem a very exciting product.
On the other hand, it it connects to Netflix, as the iPad already does, the whole idea gets a lot sexier. It also will need the content the current Apple TV has, like YouTube, MobileMe integration, podcasts and more. If they add services like Pandora, MLB TV, NBA games and more then they might really be cooking.
Roku already has a $99 Netflix box with some additional streaming services, but if Apple allowed iPad/iPhone apps to be scaled up for TV viewing the whole concept gets really, really interesting.
An iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch would also make a great remote, eh? From the Engadget post, it doesn't sound like this new tricked out Apple TV is coming along any time soon, but it should shake up the market with Google announcing a set top box and TV integration, and Microsoft, which might have something up its sleeve besides Media Center.
As we've said before, the current Apple TV is fast becoming irrelevant, and it needs to be more than a 'hobby' for Apple. Will this rumored new device do the trick for you?

Apple TV won't go anywhere until the remote is fixed. "Arrow + Select" remotes are a crappy and Apple TV can't be taken seriously as a platform until that is fixed. Now if Apple could license Nintendo's Wii Remote... It isn't perfect but it appears to be the best human interface device for a set-top box so far.

Not some web/podcasts or reruns/movies purchased through Itunes.
For a company that thrives on elegant design and giving the customer what it wants in a simple user friendly way, it's mystifying to me that they can be so wrong with AppleTV.
The masses want to come home from work, plop down on the couch and click on The Game, The local news, American Idol, Dancing with the stars, Latest episode of HBO series, etc, etc. Displayed on the big screen. Preferably skipping commercials with a DVR.
AppleTV does none of that. Some Hybrid mess of web/itunes/netflix supplied content, none of it in real time will never see widespread acceptance like a phone, ipod or ipad have.
When AppleTV first came out I said it should have been named AppleNOtv.
Since TV is what it does not provide. Maybe they can rebrand it this time with a name of Apple-everythingbut-TV.
you know what they should do they should have all the service said above but all make the AppleTV into a console
like a AppleTV app store, and you could also upscale from the iphone and the iPad... that would smash sony & Microsoft out of the water !!
that would sell millions
If it comes with the following, I'll buy it tomorrow:
1. USB for local storage.
2. Streaming from other sources, not just Apples big wireless disk drive.
3. Codecs, Codecs, Codecs. No AVI, XVID.....no way!
4. An on/off switch.....I'm serious :(.
APPLE TV IS A RIPOFF JUST BUY A CABLE TO PLUG YOUR IPOD TO YOUR TV!

Of course the UI could be different from current iPhone/ipad-ui, but otherwise it would be a same os. And I bet you can have apps on it as well. And I bet you could have apps that interact with ipad/iPhone as well. Think something like the Scrabble ipad-app that works with iPhones.
As to storage... I dont see a problem. You could stream from iTunes ( only purchased/rented content) or you could stream from your computer (who knows, maybe you could stream from existing AppleTV as well). Mac mini would make for a nice home-server ;).
Ok,
1. Apple makes their money on hardware.
2. They wait until the time is right - when they see a demand for a product.
3. There is a bonus in all purchases on iTunes, there are more countries on "the way in"
for buying and renting movies... This is also a factor - the offer they make in the ecosystem
for all users.

I'm sure their new iAds will integrate well with any content streaming app. The money will be rolling in for shareholders.
