uTorrent goes 1.0 for Mac OS X

uTorrent has recently been updated to version 1.0 (Windows users are up to version 2.0.2), its first major point release since going beta on Mac OS X. After living most of its life in Windows, the popular BitTorrent client went beta on the Mac in late 2008, and has seen a host of updates since then.
This might be a time to consider trying uTorrent. In my tests, the app launches faster than Transmission, and occupies a smaller footprint -- its DMG and the app are both smaller than Transmission. Whether or not you end up switching to uTorrent, however, is another matter, as Transmission is comparable in its feature set. This really boils down to personal preference.
While BitTorrent apps live, and do whatever they want, freely on Mac OS X, the story is different on the iPhone. Apple has kept a tight lid on restricting BitTorrent-related apps (such as a BitTorrent client controller) on the iPhone, noting that "this category of applications is often used for the purpose of infringing third party rights."
uTorrent 1.0 is available as a free download at the uTorrent site.

Transmission's built-in web interface is fully functional and formatted perfectly for the iPhone. Save the link to your home screen, bingo bango, controller app.
Biggest issue with µTorrent though is that it doesn't let you set a per-torrent download location - all files go straight to a single Downloads folder. Great speeds and fast, slick interface but that's a big of an odd omission (Windows version does it just fine...)

But on the mac... uTorrent is just faster. Which is what matters most on a download app.
Actually it's µTorrent... and it's really easy to type, just hit option+m to get the µ.

This is a torrent client, right? Downloading gigabytes of data is its sine qua non. Are torrenters really concerned about saving a megabyte or two for their client app? That's at best a trivial point and tells us nothing about the features or lack thereof in comparison to transmission. Instead, he offers this kernel of reviewing wisdom -- uh, the other app is bigger.

June 04 2010 at 9:04 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIf you wanted to control torrents on the iPhone or iPad, plenty of client applications for both windows and mac have a web front end that includes a feature to paste a torrent url into the web interface and have it fetch the file and begin downloading.
Se for a mac you'd setup transmission to run a web interface, visit on your device, add the page to your homescreen then just visit a torrent site in safari, hold you finger down on the link to the torrent file, copy then paste into the web interface's open torrent dialog.
I assume something similar is possible on a pc on a home network running a torrent client with a web interface.
It's 1.0 but it's still a Beta.
