"Magic Slate" to be unveiled today at WWDC?

Engadget has some photos of the supposed Multi-Touch trackpad peripheral Steve Jobs is going to unveil today at WWDC. There's some debate on what its name will be, but "Magic Slate" popped up back in December, and then "Magic Trackpad" showed up in an Apple trademark filing in February.

The peripheral appears to take a lot of its design from the Apple Bluetooth keyboard, including the battery compartment that doubles as a riser stand. From the photos--if they are real--the peripheral is going to be Bluetooth only. The images show no sign of what the device's actual name will be, but IMO "Magic Slate" sounds a lot cooler than "Magic Trackpad." Here's hoping Steve agrees.

If this is real, it would be a very cool peripheral. I'm not sure the design from the pics fits typical Apple design though.

Looks interesting. I'm not sure I'd like to use a track-pad as my primary input device though. They seem to hurt after a while since there's not really any tactile feedback.

I've been waiting for this since Jan 2009! A large-scale multi-touch trackpad to use on my Mac Pro would be ideal. Steve must have read my post last year =;-)

Can't believe nobody's mentioning this in the same sentence as the new HDMI-enabled Mac Minis - it wouldn't quite be a "TV" solution (unless Apple really comes under the radar with a TV input), but it would be a killer internet video solution.

I think the argument regarding mainstream usability is entirely valid. Mainstream consumers will be sticking with mice for a long time to come. I have to say, my main concern in leaving my Macbook Pro behind for an iMac is the lack of gesture based support as it makes life so much easier when navigating and organising windows. Yet, although I love my multi-touch trackpad, I would rather have a mouse for fine control and having both seems a little cumbersome.

If this is real, Apple won't be selling them by the boat load I don't think.

Engadget has updated their article: the trackpad would support handwritten input. Now I'm interested, especially if it will work through normal paper.

I'm always looking for a good tablet to be used with my Mac, right now I have a Wacom. I'd favor using an iPad as tablet but that seems too ambitious.

@Ben: relative failure of the magic mouse? I've never had a mouse like that one. I love it, although I use MagicPrefs to customize the mouse (like middle-click, and I tweaked the touch ranges a bit to match my fingers).

I knew I'd get heck if I used the phrase "relative failure." I suppose what I mean is that it hasn't taken the mouse world by storm - it's not the bestselling mouse. Also, I don't think I've come across a generally positive review of it. It's "too flat" or has "connection issues" or some other problem. I certainly wouldn't give up my Logitech Revolution MX for a Magic Mouse - in my experience, Apple makes decent mouses and Logitech makes excellent ones. I would consider the trackpad since Apple has shown some expertise in making them.

The only application where I see the trackpad falling short is gaming. Portal with a trackpad would be insanely challenging.
