"iPad in iBook" stand merges past and present

An enterprising Japanese iPad owner, who blogs under the name Dark General, decided to take matters into his own hands when he couldn't find an iPad stand that he liked. He took an old iBook G3 clamshell case and gutted it, replacing the LCD screen with the iPad and the iBook's keyboard with Apple's most recent USB keyboard. The result is the aptly-named "iPad in iBook" stand.

It's a pretty cool setup, and it shows you just how far Apple has come in design -- and tech in general -- since the iBook G3 premiered eleven years ago. In 1999, "iBooks" were the latest and greatest in laptop hardware; in 2010, "iBooks" is a Multi-Touch software application that lets you carry tens of thousands of books around with you in a device that's thinner than the iBook G3's lid. Want to make an iPad in iBook stand yourself? Dark General has a walk through on his blog (Google Translation).

When the iBook has a 12.1" TFT active-matrix display how does the builder fit the iPad into the shell with a snug fit like that?? I wanted to try and make one but i cant figure out the screen placement...

I was thinking about doing this with an old Apple eMate I have. This guy beat me to the punch. Kudos!

Rather than doing this I'd just get a Mac Book. The iPad is not a notebook. I love it for it's extreme portability.

I'm sure it's still portable... it's just in an admittedly-slightly-inconvenient stand.

I once made an iPod case out of an old portable cassette player. It wasn't so much for the usefulness, and more for the "let's see if..."

Why? iPad is meant to be stand-alone. That iPad is not happy trapped in archaic shell.

This is very clever. It looks a bit like a case I had my Hot Wheels® when I was a kid. This looks very viable to me as a case for the iPad - you've got a place for your keyboard and, with a carefully wired adapter snaked through the case, a place to add your sync cable and camera adapter (maybe he could build that into the case, too).

Set up production and you've got yourself a nice little case-making business.

...And yet the ipad comes in one color and the iPhone in two colors. I want my iBook flavors back!!!

Fun. and it's less likely to be jacked by any decent theft cause he'll think it's a crappy old bondi ibook and not an ipad.

yep. 10 hour battery life is such a burden. they could probably extend that if they underclocked the A4 to perform about the same as a G3@300-466 MHz.

you tube would be awesome.. almost 2 frames a minute!

we'll just pretend you're not actually WRONG.

12 in active-matrix TFT display, 800×600 pixel resolution

800x600 on a 12 inch screen.. MUCH better than 1024x768 on 10"

Oh, how I miss OS9...
