Mac Mini gets a sneaky update: spec bump, unibody enclosure, HDMI

The Mac Mini has received far more than a simple spec bump, however. The enclosure itself has been updated to a unibody aluminum construction similar to the MacBook Pro, and the "server" Mac Mini omits an optical drive entirely in favor of dual hard drives [this was the case for the previous server model –Ed.]. Perhaps more important than that, the Mac Mini is now the first Mac ever to include built-in HDMI. You read that right: the Mac Mini has HDMI. The Mac Mini also has an SD card slot in the back. [Ed: This is one sexy little machine!]

Apple has also addressed the well-known difficulty of upgrading the Mac Mini's RAM. There's now a removable twist-off panel on the Mac Mini's bottom that allows for easy access to the Mini's RAM slots. We're not sure yet if the hard drive will be as easy to upgrade, but at the very least, a RAM upgrade looks like it'll take less than a minute with this new model.

The Mac Mini is available now.

Isn't this the first Mac Mini which supports two displays? Having the ability to use an additional monitor, and replacing the internal HD with an SSD will make this an attractive alternative to the all-in-one iMacs.

Nice. The mac mini is properly mini and portable now. The huge power brick is no more.

I was thinking about the new mac mini and the thought came to me. Is the new mac mini a desktop or a notebook without a screen and a keyboard. This doesn't appeal to people who use their notebooks on the go but it does to people like me who use their notebooks or dektops at home and the office, for example.

compared with a notebook, the new mac mini is smaller, lighter, doesn't heat as much, supports a screen with more definiton and if you use your notebook with a large screen it will cost you less. there are many other pluses compared with a notebook. what's missing is the screen and the keyboard.

so, my question is: can we treat the mac mini as a notebook?

Apart from price being too high, HD size is way too low and the server model also sports 2 separate HDs (more electricity consumption) instead of slamming one 1.5TB and get it over with.

Apple isn't interested in selling things for the lowest prices. If you want bargains look elsewhere. Some people are willing to pay more for Apple products and some aren't.

The price for this is insane. I am sorry Apple, but this is way to much.

Of course it's up another $100. What the heck, Apple? It was supposed to be your entry-level cheap machine for people who want a Mac but can't afford an iMac. Now it's $200 more than when it came out for the base level. I need one for my media center and waited forever for this update now can't get it still because of this price increase again.

Disappointed.

Why is the SD card slot in the back of the machine? Because it is too hard to cut another slot in the aluminum front? Too expensive? At 7" square, it makes nearly a perfect pedestal for the 24" display, so putting the SD card slot on the back seems curious. Just laser out a nice little window beneath the DVD slot for the SD card and a USB port.

I'm guessing Apple decided it looks better to have a clean front and all the ports/slots in the back (save the optical drive). Might also have something to do with the way the connectors are oriented inside. Also, guessing most people only use the SD card slot for a few minutes a week (downloading pictures from camera), if they use it at all.
