TUAW's Daily App: Hipstamatic

Hipstamatic isn't a new app, but it is worth a look if you've never seen it before. It replicates the look and feel (and functionality) of those old point-and-click and even toy cameras that you might have carried around as a kid (depending on your current age of course). Nowadays, we can capture the world in digital, and soon HD, clarity, but Hipstamatic creates images the old fashioned way: with plenty of misbalanced levels, weird film coloring, and lots of dust and grit. You probably won't see the picture better, but especially if you've got a nostalgic bent, it'll probably make you feel it a lot more.

The app is currently US$1.99, and developers Synthetic Corp have added a few different "hipstapaks" for in-app purchase, which will update the various options available for cameras, flashes, and lenses. Give it a shot if you do lots of photography with your iPhone, and appreciate the retro.

i have never been able to make in-app purchases with my copy of Hipstamatic.

It's unfortunateI have never been able to make in-app purchases with my copy of Hipstamatic.

Even more frustrating the TECH SUPPORT FROM THIS COMPANY IS NONEXISTENT. Have made a couple of attempts to contact them and heard nothing back. Which seems odd when you consider that a remedy for my problem would mean more money for them.

As a result of my user experience I am an unsatisfied customer.

My issue with this app (I only discovered this after purchasing it) is the "developing" part. If I'm shooting with a rangefinder (I would never touch a holga in real life), it's because I want the film quality with the convenience of a decent point and shoot. This is not convenient. It would be cool to be able to take a bunch of photos and develop them all at once instead of waiting 45 seconds after every shot. I'd rather use my $10 rangefinder and $2 expired film.

Although I still bought some extra stuff for the app just cause aside from the developing, it's awesome.

There's absolutely no reason every iPhone user shouldn't get this app. It's 100% fantastic. You won't use it for every shot...but when you do use it, it's pretty damn great.

Here's the flickr pool: http://www.flickr.com/groups/hipstamatic/pool/

Great app, one of the first I purchased when I got an iPhone earlier this year. Takes the (pretty crappy) 2MP camera of the original iPhone and lets you take shots worth having, because they look so cool. There's quite a community on Flickr for it as well -- worth a look if you're on the fence and want to see the kinds of pics you can get with Hipstamatic.

I love this app. We had a seventies photo taking night by downloading this and laughed our faces off. Best shot of the night - http://yfrog.com/6rbyxj and an incredible one at that.

this app is so great it's very close to making a switcher out of my apple-hating friend. he had a bad experience with apple on his first mac in the 80s and still hates Jobs personally but this is so right up his alley he might move on a new iphone as soon as I can get one into his hands. I bust hipstamatic out every time we hang out just to remind him of what he's missing. hope there's no droid version on the immediate horizon cuz then I'll end up being stuck supporting him on it.

It's a camera replacement app. You choose your lens and film first and flash if you wish then shoot with those settings. It produces some wonderful shots.

So is this a camera replacement, or can it do post-processing? I'd hate to lose good photos to an app, but it would be fun to be able to alter stuff I already have.
