TUAW tested: iPhone 4 works with original iPhone dock

Editor's Note: We inadvertently neglected to acknowledge the other tipsters who brought this feature to our attention. Thank you to Alan Wyman, 'iPhone Coder,' DocRock & everyone else who pointed this out.

Over on Twitter, user TheiJcaP tipped us to the fact that the new iPhone 4 does work with the original iPhone dock. Being fanatical OCD maniacs moderately well organized, one and all, we headed off to our carefully labeled "outdated iPhone parts" box and pulled out some spare docks for units that are no longer serviceble.

Just as promised, the iPhone 4 fit perfectly into the dock, and even now my new unit is continuing its initial sync (yes, I do have a lot of data to transfer) in a happily near-vertical position.

This is just one of those tiny little bits of synchronicity that bring joy in life. It's not going to clean up oil spills or end disease and suffering, but what a lovely discovery and a pleasant surprise in our more immediate day-to-day world.

just saw this gem of an article, scurried through my graveyard of accessories, and behold, the 1st white iphone dock !...connected to 30 pin, snug as a bug, and "then" used the line out to crank the old Apple HIFI, nice an loud without the annoying "this device is not "optimized" for this iphone". Charging away and cranking pandora via HIFI with an old doc, AWESOME.

This posting gave me the idea to try the same thing with my Griffin WindowSeat windshield bracket. The included mounting plate for the original iPhone will hold the iPhone 4. It takes a little bit more effort to get the phone in the holder but the fit is snug, and the phone won't fall out.

Also, have been directly connecting iPhone with a cradle for FULLY FUNCTIONING iPhone for years with a Neo Prolink from iCarKits. Use satellite radio, maps, phone (of course) through stereo, internet (naughty), email (again)...

I have been using the original dock for my new iPhone 4 recently. I also have used a dock in my car for my iPods and iPhones for many years for music, to recharge and be able to take phone calls and use all the apps etc.

I have noticed the messages about device not "compatible" for both the firewire and USB versions of docks in the car before with no loss in function.

But I noticed a new message displayed on my screen today on the iPhone when connected to my iMac and using Shazam when I plugged it in with the app running:

" Would you like to use CAR MODE"

Of course no car was connected but somehow this dock in not "official".

FYI

I tried this out immediately! Just one more thing to be crazy happy about waiting 3 years to upgrade from the original iPhone to the iPhone 4!

My 3GS now works with Universal Dock. Used to say not designed for iPhone and would not route audio. Works now so much be iOS 4 magic :)

Newly-released Apple hardware is compatible with a previous model's accessories? Someone at Apple design is going to get fired for this.

For the LAST time, people, you are not "Obsessive Compulsive Disorder", and the phrase "I'm OCD" makes no sense. You may say you are obsessive-compulsive instead.
