Open source BitTorrent application Transmission updated to 2.0

Transmission, the lightweight, open source, and free BitTorrent client we've written about in the past, recently released version 2.0. Transmission was already one of the leanest BitTorrent clients on OS X, and the new version makes it even faster, with improvements to startup time, local data handling, and optimization of how you connect to peers and download requests. Transmission 2.0 will also search for and discover peers on your local network to connect with for even faster speeds.

While Transmission is a cross-platform, open source application, the developers continue to focus on making it feel like a native OS X app, and Transmission feels right at home with all of the other Mac-only applications I use every day. Mac users can now paste trackers into the Create window, magnet links will open the Add Transfer window, and the Compact View replaces the Minimal View to use less screen real estate.

Thanks to both its lightweight nature and its adherence to OS X design conventions, Transmission is one of the easiest torrent clients I've used. It accomplishes this ease-of-use without sacrificing the power features like scheduled bandwidth limiting, a Web interface for remotely controlling torrent activity, and port configuration; all of these features can be found in the well-organized Preferences.

I use TV Shows to get RSS feeds. It works very well and you can use any torrent client with it.

I prefer Vuze over Transmission. Vuze supports transport encryption while Transmission doesnt.

Still no good mac torrent app that supports RSS feeds. This is 2010 right? How has this not been done yet?

After (if I recall) .82 I started having all kinds of issues with Transmission. About the same time, µTorrent Alpha came out. I tried it, and have used it and only it since then without so much as a glitch.

Transmission also seems to have some kind of bizarre fanatical following if you follow the "update" feedback. Which actually turns me off to the product and make me enjoy µTorrent all the more.

Transmission wrecked three hard drives of mine. I don't know what else could of caused it but I had a HD go sour in summer 2009, Fall 2009, and Winter 2010. All using transmission. I stopped using it and now have had no HD problems.

Really? That sounds exceptionally odd, I've never seen behavior like that before. They wouldn't all have been the same kind of drive that you got at the same time would they?

Sweet! Released just in time to use it with the last 2 bittorrent sites in the world.

Apparently you are out of the loop.

Filesharing is like a hydra. Currently it's alive and well with more heads sprouting all the time.

Sure, all you need to do is beg some anonymous geek on IRC for access to a private tracker. No thanks. Bittorrent is all but dead IMHO since most of the big sites have been shut down. I wish it weren't that way, but it is.

Transmission is the bomb! I love that I can choose what files in the torrent I want. Very handy when downloading old MST3K episodes. Instead of waiting for monthst to have 10 years of episodes download I can get 2 or 3 a night and re-live my favorite 90's show all over again

Love Transmission, cannot understand how freaking late TUAW is reporting this, though. Almost two weeks late. =

I use uTorrent on Windows and it's a great client, I've never felt the need to try it on OS X though with Transmission, what kind of issues were you experiencing?

I'm glad Transmission is such a nice app, since it's also the only torrent app I've tried that consistently works on the Mac.
