Thirty years of Apple in two minutes

Here's a great video compiled by Gary Katz of Mac M.D. Inc. Using photos of Apple machines in his own collection, Gary's video highlights the major design changes that have taken place over the past 30 years. Old timers (like me) will recognize some familiar hardware, including the 7200 (how I tore my hands up on that computer's insides), the fabled Lisa and the beloved/infamous Cube.

The most jarring jump is when the iMac is introduced, breaking the cycle of beige. It's also amazing to see the enormous Mac Portable. What a beast!

Thanks to Gary for sharing this video. We enjoyed the trip down Memory Lane.

Hey, they left out the MacBook Air.

Can't believe the first Apple Computer I bought was a II+. I feel pretty old now.

Who was it that commanded way back in the 80's that "All computers must be beige!" Why beige? And why did it take so long for everyone to move to better colors?

I had the Mac IIvx. That was my own Frankenstein computer. I remember having to remove the complete drive bay to add RAM. I also added a second drive by using a cutout of the cover of a hardcover book to split the bay. Had it converted into a Centris 650. Then eventually bought a DayStar card to convert it to a PowerPC. That thing gave me a lot of pain in my hands too... but immense pleasure as well!

Unfortunately, the Mac IIvx was the first Mac to be made obsolete in only a few months by a newer, cheaper computer (the Centris line). Before that, the models lasted quite long... it started the flood of Mac models.

hehehe... I also messed up my fingers by trying to add RAM to a 7200. I missed the Apple IIGS that started me on this path. Also missing was, what some might argue was the best computer ever made (if time could be frozen) the Mac IIci.

Wait, the iMac G4 to iMac G5 was a "major design change" but the Power Mac G4 to Power Mac G5 was not? Huh?

Very cool. It's amazing how many of those designs that are around 7 years old still look better than the majority of devices on the market today.
