App demo: The Mind Medic

When I used to read OMNI magazine I remember getting into the whole subliminal and self-hypnosis fad. I bought a few cassettes but didn't wind up seeing a ton of results. Maybe I was doing it wrong because there's some research that points to the possibility that positive affirmations, voiced while you sleep, may have an effect on your conscious thoughts. If someone whispered in my ear all night that I was a super guy, I could see how that might wind up making me feel a little better.

Enter The Mind Medic, an app to whisper in your ear through the night and provide you with affirmations designed to change behaviors. Quitting smoking is the classic use case for such an app. The app allows you to record your own affirmations and plays them back at specific intervals throughout the night. It doesn't just repeat them every 5 minutes -- you'd never go to sleep! An update should be coming that will allow this app to run in the background as well, which would make it a bit more useful, I think.

The app is straightforward enough (and quite simple anyway), but check the video for a short demo and explanation from the developer.

Well, website seem fishy.

I bought it and read in the app about affirmations to use on their website. You get there, click "Recent Affirmations"; you need to register. So I do, then click "Recent Affirmations" again (there is no choices under the login link).

All of the sudden your about to sign up for a yearly subscription for 11.95$ with Paypal. Naturally I don't buy anything without knowing what it is. Especially not after buying the app. WTF?

FYI, the article in the "some research" link doesn't say anything about the effects of receiving affirmations during sleep. It suggests that affirmations may be able to help lessen the rebound effect that often comes along after someone goes out of their way to suppress specific thoughts.

Thanks for this post! Full disclosure: I wrote the app. And I'd just like to say that it will run all night with the screen locked so you can lock it and sleep soundly. You'll wake to a confirmation message that it has completed (after 7 hours).

I plan on making it iOS4 multitasking capable just in case one launches it while going to bed, and then maybe gets a text or something that they respond to which would result in putting Mind Medic in the background. I'm going to wait to gather more user feedback before updating however. This first run is just very simple. I didn't want people having to think too much about using it before going to sleep.

I personally run it in airplane mode while charging overnight w/ the screen locked.

How would that make it more useful? Do you *really* need multitasking when you're sound asleep?
