Empowering your iPhone with Scosche's passPORT

iPod car stereo integration is great. You can control your music library with your car stereo's controls. In some cases, you can see track info like artist, song and album information. Best of all, your iPhone's charging via a dock connector while all of this is happening -- that is, if you have a fairly recent integration kit.

While many older car stereo integration kits can play and control music through their iPods and iPhones, they've lost the ability to charge newer models. The reason for this is that Apple re-engineered the dock connector for the iPhone 3G, second generation iPod touch and fourth generation iPod nano onward.

However, you can empower yourself against this annoyance with Scosche's passPORT. The passPORT is a dongle that serves as an intermediary between your car's dock connector cable and your iPhone, charging it while you're enjoying your music.

Scosche has a list on its site with car compatibility information. While my car's kit -- the original iPodYourBMW factory kit -- isn't on the list, it worked flawlessly with the passPORT.

The Scosche passPORT is available at the Apple online store, and at some Apple retail stores for US$19.95.

I needed one of these for my Mini Cooper back when the 3G first came out, as it charged differently than my previous nano and Touch. The one issue with it is that the iphone draws more charge when its battery is very low, and the passPORT will not charge. Fortunately it is not the only iphone charger in the car... important when more than one iphone owner is in the car, a daily occurrence.

I've been using one with my iPhone 3G for two years now, and it works great. The FM transmitter in my car from my old iPod works just fine with this adapter. My one complaint is that it doesn't "click" in and have the pinch-to-release feature. It only slides in, so the weight of a cord and this adapter sometimes pulls out the plug.

I have BMW 335 2010 w/ IPOD kit to play music on my car. The kit doesn't charge 3gs so I purchased Scosche. It DOESN'T charge the phone. Luckily BMW also has extra USB port that allows charging (But doesn't support playing music through my car stereo). What's AWESOME is that iPhone 4 charges through my ipod car kit that came with my car.

So at end... the writer probably has older model of BMW.

I would recommend avoiding Belkin's version of this device. Mine stopped working after a couple of months.

EDIT: That's Griffin, NOT Belkin.

I use this with my newer iPod nano in my 2006 Volkswagen Touareg. It works fairly well, but there's a lot of electrical interference that causes intermittent buzzing sounds. YMMV.

I miss my old nano that recharged via firewire. The VW car kit would charge it.

I've gone through Two of them. The fundamental problem is that the sheer size of this little extention when connected to the the cable of your choosing coupled with the fact that nothing holds the dock in place on your phone, the stupid thing slides out of the dock of your I-Device and you lose connection. Also, if you add this to a car and you are using it for audio, prepare for some ignition noise through your speakers. I talked to a scoshe rep at CES this year and his response was that apple doesn't license a dock connecting with a pinch mechanism to which I responded : you need to reengineer your device then to be more compact and exert less pull on the dock otherwise you are not selling anything of value.

Overall: go find some nonlegit adapter online, because this thing sucks.

I've had these same issues with losing connectivity plus the size of unit prevents me from keeping my iphone in a tray under the center console in my car.

I have one of these things and it just made the whole connection bulky and made me wonder if it'd snap inside the phone or not.

I got a "Peripheral / PAC IS710 5 Volt Charging Adapter for iPod/iPhone" instead. If you can stomach dishing out $30 for a cable, it's a lot more elegant than the adapter solutions. I got mine through Amazon.

I forgot to note that I don't get any interference using that cable. The Amazon page says people have purchased that cable + the Scosche adapter together, which is simply unnecessary since the cable has the converted pinouts already.

Scosche makes crap, that thing is HUGE! Who wants to put that in line with a connector?

I been using one from Cablejive, much smaller and same price.

Gratuitous BMW joke:

Q. What's the difference between a rose and a beemer?
A. The rose has the prick on the outside.

You have to make sure that your car's USB port also is capable of supplying enough current to charge the phone. I had to get a Y-cable and a USB cigarette lighter adapter to charge my 3GS when I upgraded from the original iPhone.
