The look of free: iPhone 4 cases offered by Apple
As noted earlier this morning, Apple's Bumper refund & free case program is underway for the iPhone 4. While everyone knows the look of the Bumper (and the cheap ways to make your own), the third-party cases included in the program may be less familiar. Below, a gallery to fill you in.It's worth noting that although you can get yourself a free Snap Case, Shield Micra, Motif, Reveal Etch, Fitted or PixelSkin HD case from Apple, the company will not be refunding previous purchases of any third-party cases; you can only get your money back on a Bumper.
If you haven't chimed in yet, please do take our poll about which case you think is the yummiest.
Case order now fixed in the gallery.

Why is Apple only offering the black bumper? Especially since it's only offering the black iPhone? And every other free case is either black, grey or clear (and therefore black).
But in particular, why just black bumpers? I'm assuming that to get as many made as quickly as possible, all production lines have been shifted to black. That sucks.
Has it hit anyone else that Apple is delivering cases 3-5 weeks after they're ordered but only allows for a thirty day return policy. So it's likely that the 30-day return policy expires before you have the chance to see if the case improves reception. Nice.

If you donât want to wait 3-5 weeks for it, come on over to our place.
You posted the wrong incase one, they were solid incase snap cases, not the ones with the holes.
July 24 2010 at 2:53 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo this morning I got a notice from Apple saying the refund for my purchased bumper is being refunded. Then tonight I got an email saying I'm eligible for a free case. I purchased the phone and bumper on separate cards. Did I somehow get both a refund and a free case?
July 24 2010 at 12:21 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYes, you can get both.
July 24 2010 at 10:02 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'm beginning to think that for simplicity Apple simply decided to refund all bumper purchases with no further conditions. So those of us who bought one ahead if the program get a double win. The number if us that take advantage if this was probably deemed too small to worry about.
July 24 2010 at 10:02 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHere's an interesting twist others have alluded to: as best as I can tell, the bumper refund program and the case program are two *separate* programs with separate terms and conditions. This has some interesting consequences for those of us who already purchased bumpers: it would seem we are free to participate in both.
A quirk in my specific situation adds additional support to this idea. I bought five bumpers from Apple the first time I actually saw them in the store: one for each of four different phones (mine, my wife's, and my parents'), and one extra which I had been intending to return. I have received a refund for all five. In fact, my parents have already reimbursed me for their bumpers, so now I owe them some dough.
So it would *seem*, at least, that the bumper refunds are simply proceeding without regard to where they actually ended up.
I believe you are correct. I received the refund email earlier this week, but was also able to order another Bumper through the app. I received my order confirmation for the second one this morning (delivery date of Aug. 1st).

They say they've tested and it solves the problem as well as a case, plus it leaves your iPhone 4 looking the way it was designed! (It's also cheaper than any of the cases.)
I'm in Canada, and I was planning to be in line next Friday for the roll-out. Now I'm thinking along with Paul Turner that maybe it would be wiser to wait for the inevitable redesign. Except, since I upgraded my 3G to iOS 4, it runs about as well as Windows Vista on a 286!
If Apple can make an upset customer out of me (three Macs, two iPhones, one iPod Touch, multiple iPods, Mac user since '85) they've really achieved something!
*If* they do a redesign---and, frankly, I doubt they will---I think it will involve an insulating overlay on top of the antenna band. In other words, they'll just do a manufacturer install of something like the Zagg "4FIX Band/Antenna Coverage" option, but perhaps more permanent.
July 23 2010 at 10:56 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyGet your free one. Put it on eBay. Someone might buy it. Get the shield you want.
@mcg odds are it'll be some sort of clear coat finish on top of the metal to stop our fingers from bridging the gap.
PixelSkin HD ordered. Thanks Apple!
July 23 2010 at 9:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo what rights are we giving up by taking these free cases? A flawed product that most likely will be re-designed by the end of the year. Does anyone else think the White iPhone story is odd - are they are just going to fix the antenna problem and we get stuck with a bandaid fix. By taking this case am I saying okay no need to give me the fixed version?
July 23 2010 at 8:39 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyGod man, get over it. I seriously DOUBT Apple will be doing any redesign. It's a problem with all phones. And look at how many iPhones people have taken back. FEWER THAN THE 3GS.
The white iPhone thing seems to be a quality control issue. I think Apple wants it produced a certain way and they cannot do it right now. I'd say the smart move was to delay the product rather than have people like yourself bitch about it.
Recap - No antenna problem. It's something that happens to all phones. White glass is harder to produce in the quality and quantity than Apple is getting from supplier.
