Riskternatives: Conquist and Strategery

I looked at two world conquest-style games that follow from the original Risk board game: Strategy and Conquist. Admittedly, I'm not a big Risk fan. I much prefer games that involve more building and planning and less random dice rolling. With that confession on the table, I did find that both games were well made and offered many nice features.

For US$3.99, Conquist for the iPad offers an app that, of the two, is closer to real Risk. The map is the standard Risk world (see the screen shot above) and Risk-style grace notes like those cards you collect and trade in are included in game play. Conquist provides multi-player interaction using a single interaction board, so you don't have to "pass and play" your iPad around. If you don't have friends around, it's easy enough to set up two to five bots to play against.
Conquist's graphics were well done and the game has nice screen feel. I sometimes found the icons on the board a little confusing and would have appreciated an obvious help button. But if you're not looking to restart a game or adjust options, the normal game play is very easy to follow and the interaction elements were nicely touchable and well laid-out.

At half the price (US$1.99), Strategery app offers the same basic game-play, a simpler interface and a novel twist. Instead of mimicking the Risk board, Strategery automatically generates new worlds with random layouts. Although the maps produced look a bit crude (see the image to the right), I found that I rather enjoyed the unexpected nature of the gameplay this produced.

Whatever algorithm produces these maps has done a nice job of interspersing seas and oceans and providing intricate common borders. It doesn't look as nice but it adds a twist to the proceedings.

I found that game play proceeded much faster on Strategery than on Conquist. With the "fast fast fast forward" feature enabled (the three arrows on the top-right of the screen shot), I could move through a game in just a few minutes. That's perfect for a short, fun break.

You don't have to roll dice, the application does it for you. That streamlines the interaction and leaves you to decide just where to plan your attacks and expand your border. User-settable options allow you to adjust the size of the board and the degree of difficulty. The "Easy" option is really a bit too easy for anyone familiar with the game but is a great way to introduce it to new players.

With the original (and official Electronic Arts version) selling for just $4.99, you might ask why you should consider the alternatives. I found both knock-offs to provide excellent value and game-play. Conquist's interface meets or exceeds the EA version. Strategery adds a new spin that goes beyond the expected. Both games should appeal to anyone who likes Risk-style games.

My brother, a friend and I all just got back form a camping trip and we spent hours and hours playing "Blood and Honor" it is very much a risk clone but has some different twists especialy in the strategy mode. We played it on the Ipad but it is universal. It has multiple map options and was neverending fun. http://appshopper.com/games/blood-honor

Dominion and Dominion HD are the best of the Risk bunch. I can't believe it wasn't mentioned :(

Lux Dlx 2 is my personal favorite Risk style game- tons of downloadable maps (like a half dozen roman empire maps alone). Hardest AI is still pretty easy for risk veterans, but much harder than the official risk game. Looks awesome on the ipad, and attacking is very streamlined and quick.

Reaper AI is now there and is much much harder... you'll see "Computer is thinking" for a few seconds when that AI is playing and it makes some really good moves.

Love that the iPad version is the same as the iPhone (ie, free for existing users), but Lux2 should really allow rotation... on the iPhone/iTouch it's not a big deal, but on the iPad, it's just unnatural to play in portrait mode.

Still one of may fav games to veg out.

Yeah, the Reaper AI is pretty challenging, but no good at wiping out opponents at the opportune times (like nuking a player w/ only 1 card, instead of waiting until 3 or 4; or taking someone out too early, when cards are worth under 20 armies). If you can stay in the game through a few rounds of turn-ins, then take out an opponent w/ 3 cards (when you have 4), you can cash in mid-turn, then either take out the next opponent (get another mid-turn cash-in), or cash in again next turn- 150+ armies in one or two turns is usually enough to either steamroll the remaining opponents or at least consolidate and hunker down in any continents of your choosing. Wow, I'm a nerd, if you've made it this far, I apologize :P

I'd suggest Slay and Conquest (both are universal apps, and Slay has a free lite version). Conquest is very much a Risk clone, but Slay is a different kind of strategy game in the vein of Risk. Worth looking in to.

I have to say, I am a big fan of Chillingo's Dominion. Great Risk clone with classic rules and new rules that make it much more entertaining. Online play is great, too.

I'd also like to suggest Lux (can't remember if it's still on the App Store... it may have been pulled). It's RISK, but forgoes some of the details for a quicker game (like always rolling max dies, etc). Graphics are simple, and the game is quite stable, running with zero issue on my 3G+iOS4 (unlike most newer games which won't run on 3G with any satisfaction at all).

LuxTouch is not only still in the App Store but it was updated for iOS4 compatibility within the past couple of days. Go grab it!

It wasn't clear from the article, but Strategery is a Universal app as well -- which is a big plus for those of us with both iPhones/iPod touches and iPads.
