Rumor: TiVo stock climbs on talk of deal with Apple for new Apple TV
A small post in Barron's noted today that TiVo shares have jumped up about 5% today on rumors that the company's DVR technology may be included in the next iteration of the Apple TV. TiVo's Premiere device has greater functionality than the Apple TV, with the ability to record up to 150 hours of HD video (with the Premiere XL), on-demand video streaming from Netflix, Amazon Video, and YouTube, viewing of photo libraries on TV, and a choice of music and photo streaming services.
There has been a lot of speculation as of late that Apple may be poised to make the Apple TV more than just a hobby. With Google TV just around the corner and Google making deals with Sony, Logitech, Intel, and the Dish Network, Apple may be looking for partners to help jump-start a revival in the neglected Apple TV.
As noted in Barron's:"Is it true? Who knows?"

I've been looking for an excuse to ditch my comcast box, I'd count this as a reason to get an apple tv.

Get TiVo's guide data and any crap hardware becomes top of the line with the best ability to "set it and forget it" out there.
But I can't see Apple doing a DVR box that requires the approval of the consortium of cable giants' CableLabs in order to ship a product with a CableCard.
And without a CableCard, you get very few stations, so there's no need for a guide.
I was trying to figure out what the "mystery app" in iLife is. I don't necessarily believe the Tivo rumor, but "DVR app" has risen to the top of my list.

That way, no need for Apple to invest in any tv tuner technology. Leave that to Elgato... yep tv is on the way out anyway.

July 26 2010 at 9:45 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWe just got TiVO in New Zealand and we're wondering how this sh*t ever got off the ground.
July 26 2010 at 9:17 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhatever happened to Apple doing $30 a month unlimited tv and movie viewing on itunes, I'd sign up for that and get an Apple TV, good bye ComcASSt.
July 26 2010 at 8:28 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYeah, this sounds like one of those BS leaks Apple puts out to feel out public sentiment.
I'd be surprised to see Netflix on there, if for no other reason than it'll cut Apple's rental profits.
The new TiVo Premiere is written in Adobe Flash I believe so this seems unlikely

July 26 2010 at 7:09 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replythere are a lot of "ifs" here but if the next generation Apple TV uses the App store, I could see Apple trying to get Tivo on board with a Tivo app ready for launch. Would make a lot of sense... along with a Netflix app, etc.
