Apple releases new 27-inch LED Cinema Display

At long last, Apple has updated the Cinema Display line with a new 27-inch LED model that will ship later this year. With its 2560 x 1440 resolution, your pixels will enjoy 60% more elbow room than on the 24-inch LED model.

In addition to the extra real estate, this model offers an iSight camera, mic and speakers, plus a powered USB 2.0 hub (3 ports) and MagSafe connector to charge your laptop. The display includes ambient light sensor, which adjusts the display's brightness in response to the light in a room.

Apple's also keen to describe the display's environmental friendliness, noting that it uses mercury-free LED technology, arsenic-free glass and recyclable materials. Additionally, the display meets Energy Star 5.0 requirements and achieves EPEAT Gold status.

It sure sounds nice, and it will be available in September for US$999. Note that it requires a Mac with a Mini DisplayPort.

I've tried to find the answer on forums and other blogs but I can't find a good answer about the new LED screens... what will it be like to try and use it as a montor and TV? I am in need of both (haven't replaced my TV since freshman year of college) and am curious whether I can save a buck by not buying both and trying to get dual utility from an ACD. Any thoughts?

I wish there's matte option... :(

With the new 27" and the EOL of the existing 2 LCDs, I am officially not able to purchase any Apple made LCD. Said.

Would like to use a 27" Apple display like this with my early 2008 Mac Pro but the requirement for the Mac to have a mini displayport... I wounder what cable solutions there will be, if any?

doesn't line up with 27" iMac .. so you need to sit in on top of a book ..ugh.. to get the screens to line up ... http://www.apple.com/displays/images/gallery_hero5_20100727.png

it would be "just right" if you set it on top of a macbook pro. That's obviously what they want you to do.

That's really disappointing and frankly, sloppy by Apple. Maybe they'll release an iBook to put it on.

Oh wait, that's been done, hasn't it?

The 256GB SSD combined with a 1 or 2 TB HDD is a nice option.

"If you configure your iMac with both the solid-state drive and a Serial ATA hard drive, it will come preformatted with Mac OS X and all your applications on the solid-state drive. Then you can use the hard drive for videos, photos, and other files."

$1,000.00 is too much for a 27" display. I don't care how many accessories they integrate into the darn thing because the price point is a deal killer.

Dell is selling a similar display for even more money (the Dell UltraSharp U2711, which goes for $1,100) and it doesn't have a built in camera, speakers, or ambient light sensor. You can get a 27" display for under $500, but it won't be at this resolution.

I kind of wish they at least had the option of matte, even if they charged an extra $50 for it. It would still be cheaper than Dell's Ultrasharp U2711.

Wow, for just $34.99 you can have your wish!

I suspect this is why the displays and laptop screens are going mostly all-glossy; it's easy to un-gloss a display, but awfully tricky to un-matte it...

Matt, how do those perform for calibration?

It's glossy. I can't wait until Apple gives up on this glossy garbage and goes back to matte finish for displays.

I understand a hard display is required for touch screens, but when touch is not required, matte gives less eyestrain and a much better image overall, due to reduced reflections and glare.

At least they didn't kill the 30" display; there's still one functional large Apple display available.

Agreed - I've been buying up old ACDs for this very reason.
