Mac Pro refresh bumps up the high end: these go to 12 cores

Processor BTO options range from four cores up to the aforementioned 16; the full matrix includes "Westmere" Xeon X5670 chops running at up to 3.33GHz on the single-chip machine and 2.93GHz on the dual-processor model. Only the dual-processor model can achieve dodecacore status.

Mac Pros now offer the ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics processor with 1GB of memory, with a BTO option of the ATI Radeon HD 5870 with 1GB of memory. Display output options include two Mini DisplayPorts and one dual-link DVI port. For storage, the 512GB SSD is now an option, and if you're feeling particularly flush you can load up with four of them.

As noted above, the machines will ship in August; the Apple Store is currently still shipping the older models.

I am disappointed about the new Mac Pro (and the new Macs in general)

The latest Macs/Mac Pros have no:

- no HDMI (except for the Mac Mini)
- no Blu-ray
- no USB 3
- no eSATA
- video cards are so damn slow.... 1 GB...??? ATI Radeon HD 5870 is a joke... PCs have 2 GB video cards or even Dual SLI cards
- loud (no Zalman cooler as an option)
- no decent keyboard (it's a pain to type with it!!! The Logitech Wireless Keyboard K350 is so much nicer!)
- no acceptable mouse!
- Mini DisplayPort is another bad joke! Why do I have to shell out $30 to connect my screen?

The first thing I do is throw away (actually give away to students) the mouse and the keyboard and get myself a real keyboard and a real mouse from Logitech.

An entry level Mac Pro is empty, I would have to add all these components... and still Blu-ray wouldn't play. A better video card won't help much without an driver blessed by Apple. I spend a boatload of money and the new Mac Pros aren't faster. My new Dells are so wicked fast ;-)

The 6-core is a little slower and the dual 6-core is a lot slower (but I paid a fortune for it!!!)... OK, admitted Cinema 3D would be indeed faster, but I don't use it (and I won't use it anytime soon) and most apps won't take advantage of anytime 6 or 12-core anytime soon. Maybe in 2-3 years multi-core will be en vogue, but today neither Final Cut nor Creative Suite 5 takes much notice whether you have 4 core or dual 6core...

The new Mac Pro late summer 2010 is so much slower than my new Dells!

And most of all Macs are totally overpriced! Look at how badly the economy is doing:-(

So, if the Radeon HD 5770 is shipping in a brand-new, just-introduced top-of-the-line Mac Pro, does that make it one generation behind the curve or two?

OMG, CS5 is gonna crash SO fast with the new mac pro I'm gonna order next month! And with Dual 27's, is that Adobe Error screen will be beautiful!

Damnit I knew it. As we discussed on Sunday's talkcast… it was inevitable Apple would release new Mac Pros because I recently bought one. The crappy part is I couldn't wait because of a project I'm working on.

Argh

Video card stats are always a bit confusing to me, including this time.

What does "one DVI (dual-link) port" mean? Does dual mean I can hook up my 2 DVI monitors to the dual-link port?

Looking closer at the specs page, http://www.apple.com/macpro/specs.html , I think I have the answer to my own question.

"Additional DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter (optional)"

So, yes, but not without buying an additional cable.

no, dual link is necessary to drive larger monitors. You can attach second and thrird monitors through the mini display ports

Blame intel. They won't add USB 3.0 support until next year. However, you could probably get a PCI Express USB 3 card.

If I had the money to just throw around, the first thing I would do is buy a totally maxed-out Mac Pro.

Damn those are sweet machines...
